At 12:18 a.m. on June 23, the Myanmar military junta carried out an airstrike using two bombs targeting the historic Shin Pin Thar Dun Oo Pagoda, located in Ward No. 2, Nawtoke Gyi Town, according to local reports. The blast caused the collapse and destruction of the pagoda’s spires and structures.

Shin Pin Thar Dun Oo Pagoda is a prominent ancient stupa in Nawtoke Gyi Town. It is said to have originated from a divine sign when a bull belonging to a novice monk named Maung Thar Dun Oo, from Nwa Hto Ywa village, bowed its head and bled at the site—leading to the establishment of the pagoda based on a prophecy by Ashin Naing Zan, a revered monk. Hence, the pagoda came to be known as Shin Pin Thar Dun Oo.

Furthermore, records state that during the early Pagan era, Crown Prince Kwan Saw Kyaung Phyu, who later ascended the throne, once pledged allegiance at this pagoda and, upon becoming king, undertook renovations and worshipped at the site.

The stupa stood seven stories tall, constructed with teak wood panels, supported by 59 wooden pillars. As a result of the recent bombing, its main structures and sacred reliquary spires were heavily damaged and destroyed.
