Myanmar Domestic News Updates – Jun 19, 2025 Morning

📌📌 1. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Stands in Unison With the People’s Revolution, Says NUG Defense Minister

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi stands firmly alongside the people’s revolution, even from outside the prison walls, said Union Minister for Defense of the National Unity Government (NUG), U Yee Mon, in a birthday tribute marking her 80th birthday.

He stated,

“Having both General Aung San and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as father and daughter is truly a blessing for the people of Myanmar. Their moral integrity, intellect, courage, and sacrifice have been guiding beacons for all of us. Today, on June 19, 2025, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi turns exactly 80. And yet, she is spending her 80th birthday within one of the prisons run by the brutal military junta. At this moment, the people of Myanmar are deeply missing and longing for their beloved ‘Mother Suu.’ Across all ages—young and old—the people lovingly call her ‘Mother Suu.’ That affectionate title reflects both their heartfelt admiration and their reverence for her as the mother of the Myanmar society.”

He continued,

“Just as love is reciprocal, the love Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has always shown toward the people has been met with an outpouring of love from the people themselves. Conversely, the military regime—riddled with envy and pettiness, and viewing the people as enemies—despises Daw Aung San Suu Kyi precisely because the people love her. That is the reason why they have not released her to this day. It is because she continues to stand firmly and resolutely with the people’s great revolution, even from behind bars.”

Furthermore, the Defense Minister added,

“Knowing full well the cruelty of the military regime, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi expects no mercy or compassion from them. What she hopes for is nothing less than the victory of the people’s revolution. It is that triumph whose song she listens to.”

📌📌 2. Suu Foundation Confirms Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Was Injured by Earthquake

According to an official statement from the Suu Foundation, the prison building in which Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is held was damaged during the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck on March 28, 2025. As a result, she sustained an injury to her left arm.

Jean Todt, Chair of the Suu Foundation, and Dr. Michael Marett-Crosby, Executive Director, jointly expressed their concern:

“We are extremely worried about Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s health and overall well-being. The United Nations has also called for her release. On the occasion of her 80th birthday, the Suu Foundation calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners. This is an essential step for peace and reconciliation in Myanmar.”

Her lawyers, François Zimeray and Catalina de la Sota, also raised serious concerns:

“Since 2021, the military council has held Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in complete isolation. Given her advanced age and the injuries reportedly sustained during the earthquake, we are deeply concerned that she could die in prison. The world seems to be turning a blind eye to this situation.”

The brutal military regime has unlawfully detained the 80-year-old State Counsellor since its coup and has kept her whereabouts hidden ever since.
