๐๐ 1. Landslide in Thandaunggyi Township Claims 11 Lives
August 7
Due to continuous heavy rainfall in Thandaunggyi Township, Kayin State, landslides and flash floods triggered by mountain runoff have led to the deaths of at least 11 people, with others still reported missing, according to rescue workers.
The landslide initially occurred on July 29, damaging around 30 houses, of which four were completely destroyed, though no casualties were reported at that time.
However, after the rain on August 4, fatal landslides occurred on August 5, resulting in increasing loss of life.
As of the morning of August 7, with rain still falling, a local resident said that landslides continued to impact both the urban area of Thandaunggyi and nearby villages—such as Laipyale, Khwe, and others—where 11 people residing in hillside gardens had died, and several remain missing. Landslides continue to occur, and homes are still being damaged.
The resident added that this disaster is unprecedented in Thandaunggyi Township. Significant infrastructure such as prominent creeks, bridges, and inter-village roads have been completely destroyed. Long-established trees such as teak, durian, betel nut, and economically cultivated falapine crops have all been wiped out.
The reported figures are as of the morning of August 7, and because it is still raining, some residents who had been living in hillside garden plots have not returned.
Rescue teams also reported that retrieving the bodies of those who perished in the landslides in the hillside areas has been extremely difficult due to the ongoing hazardous conditions.
