๐๐ 1. Emergency Provision of Food, Shelter, and Medical Care for Earthquake-Affected Communities – Union Minister Dr. Win Myat Aye
April 13
Union Minister Dr. Win Myat Aye stated that the National Unity Government (NUG) has implemented emergency measures to provide food, shelter, and healthcare services for communities affected by the major earthquake.
Speaking at a press briefing on the NUG’s response to the major earthquake in the Sagaing region, Dr. Win Myat Aye, Union Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, told Radio NUG:
"In areas under military council control, our humanitarian volunteers have had to navigate various risks to assess the damage and losses caused by the earthquake. Similarly, in terms of aid delivery, we face numerous obstacles. Operating within SAC-controlled areas often subjects our efforts to criticism. However, regardless of the criticism, our primary concern is ensuring that support reaches the people in need—without discrimination.
The provision of shelter is especially critical, as many citizens have been forced to sleep on the streets or in open areas without any protection. Thus, our top priority has been to ensure the timely delivery of tents, tarpaulins, and shelter materials, followed closely by urgent medical assistance and treatment for the injured."
In addition to emergency food and healthcare support, efforts have also been made to repair inter-village roads and trade routes, including the re-digging of wells to secure access to drinking water and facilitate the distribution of emergency supplies.
Deputy Minister Naing Tun Maung further stated that direct financial aid has been provided to those affected. Preparations are also underway to dispatch field teams to the impacted areas to offer direct assistance and convey condolences to those who have lost loved ones or suffered injuries.

April 13
U.S. Ambassador to Myanmar, Susan Stevenson, conveyed her wishes for the people of Myanmar to remain safe during this year’s Thingyan festival, sharing her message through social media.
She noted that although it is her second year at the embassy, this marks her third Thingyan in Myanmar. Her first experience with the festival was in 1994, during a journey from Thailand into Myanmar’s Tachileik.
Ambassador Stevenson described Thingyan as a deeply meaningful holiday for the people of Myanmar—symbolizing hope and new beginnings. She added that the festival’s water can metaphorically wash away the misfortunes of the past year and allow people to start afresh in the New Year.
She acknowledged that this year is particularly difficult due to the earthquake in Sagaing, which caused tragic loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, and disruption of transportation networks. In response, the United States is partnering with allies and technical experts to support recovery efforts.
The Ambassador also affirmed America’s continued support for efforts toward peace, expressing hope that the next Thingyan will be brighter. The U.S. Embassy in Yangon extended heartfelt wishes for peace and joy to all Myanmar families during the New Year celebrations.
