Today’s top stories include:
- Reports say a military Y-12 aircraft providing air cover for military vessels in Kachin State may have been shot down. KIA and allied forces are reportedly searching the suspected crash area.
- A military airstrike on a monastery in Shwebo Township killed three people, including the presiding monk. In Hpakant, military troops reportedly shot dead two civilians and detained two others. Military columns are also conducting operations and airstrikes around Ngathayauk and Nyaung-U.
- Three prison personnel, including an officer, were shot dead in Sinbaungwe, while two police officers were killed in an ambush in Taungdwingyi.
- Norwegian police have opened a criminal investigation involving Telenor over allegations related to the transfer of data and surveillance equipment in Myanmar and searched the company’s headquarters.

1. Reports of Y-12 Aircraft Shot Down in Kachin State

Reports emerged on the morning of September 16 that a Myanmar military Y-12 aircraft providing air cover and conducting bombing operations for military vessels traveling between Shwegu and Bhamo in Kachin State had been shot down by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and allied forces.
Local sources said military vessels were traveling in both directions between Bhamo and Shwegu that morning. KIA-led forces reportedly attacked some of the vessels as well as an aircraft providing air cover for them.
Local military sources posted cryptic celebratory messages on social media suggesting that an aircraft had been brought down.
Since the military vessels began operating in Kachin State, KIA and allied forces have repeatedly attacked them. Videos have also recently emerged showing resistance forces firing heavy machine guns at aircraft providing protection for the vessels.
Before the 2021 coup, the Chinese-made Y-12 was primarily used by Myanmar’s military as a transport aircraft. Since the coup, however, the military has modified Y-12s for bombing missions.
The reported downing of the aircraft has not yet been independently confirmed. If confirmed, September 16 would mark a day on which resistance forces destroyed both a military vessel and an aircraft.
2. Military Vessel Reportedly Sunk Near Shwegu

KIA and allied forces reportedly attacked three military vessels traveling from Shwegu toward Bhamo, sinking one and forcing the other two to retreat, according to local military sources.
The three vessels left Shwegu on the morning of September 16 and traveled north along the Ayeyarwady River. KIA-led resistance forces reportedly attacked them near Weima Gyi village in Shwegu Township.
A local source said one vessel was sunk during the early-morning attack while the remaining two turned back toward Shwegu.
On September 14, KIA and allied forces also reportedly used drones to attack and sink a military vessel traveling downstream from Bhamo. Military reports also claimed that four vessels were attacked and destroyed between Shwegu and Bhamo on September 13.
The military has been using river convoys to transport food, ammunition and reinforcements from Mandalay toward Bhamo. KIA and allied forces have repeatedly intercepted and attacked these convoys along the Ayeyarwady River.
3. Three Killed in Airstrike on Shwebo Monastery; Civilians Killed and Detained in Hpakant

Three people, including the presiding monk, were killed when military forces bombed a monastery in Hnama Sarit village, Shwebo Township, Sagaing Region.
At around 12:30 p.m. on September 16, a jet fighter reportedly carried out three bombing runs on the monastery while a drinking-water purification system was being installed.
The presiding monk and two local residents were killed at the scene, while eight others were injured.
Following the airstrike, Infantry Battalion 42, based in Shwebo, reportedly fired three rounds of 120-mm artillery toward the village.
Meanwhile, in Lone Khin village tract in Hpakant Township, Kachin State, military troops reportedly shot dead two civilians and detained another two at around 8 p.m. on September 15.
The victims were identified as Aung Kyaw Moe and Zin Min Thu, while Thein Zaw and Si Thu were reportedly detained.
In Mandalay Region, military columns have also entered villages between Ngathayauk and Nyaung-U, where residents reported arson, beatings and arrests. Thousands of civilians have fled their homes.
On September 15, troops reportedly raided and burned Taw Pya village in Ngathayauk Township and entered several other villages, including Shwe Hlan Pyan, detaining at least five people.
Military forces continued attacks using aircraft, drones and artillery on September 16, forcing residents from around 15 villages to flee.
In western Demoso Township, Karenni State, a military suicide drone also reportedly struck an area where a village football match was being held at around 1:30 p.m. on September 16. A man in his 20s was injured.
4. Prison Personnel and Police Officers Killed in Magway Region

Three prison personnel, including an assistant supervisor from Bawa Thit Prison in Sinbaungwe Township, Magway Region, were shot dead, according to Thayet District Battalion 5.
The incident occurred on August 28 along the Koe Pin–Thagara road. Resistance forces said they attempted to stop a vehicle carrying prison officer Tun Tun Lin, another prison employee and a prison block leader returning from a gambling gathering. They said the men attempted to flee and were subsequently fired upon.
All three were killed. Resistance forces said they seized an MA-12 rifle, an MA-11 rifle, ammunition, playing cards and bottles of alcohol.
In a separate incident in Taungdwingyi Township, two police officers were killed while traveling from a checkpoint near Thet Ke Kyin village on the Yangon–Mandalay Union Highway No. 2.
At around 7 a.m. on September 13, the two officers were traveling by motorcycle to change guard duty at the Pyat Kyal police station when resistance forces ambushed them.
Both officers were killed, and resistance groups said they seized a G3 rifle, two magazines, 19 rounds of ammunition and a mobile phone.
Several local resistance groups said they jointly carried out the operation.
5. Burma Liberation Democratic Front Holds Training Graduation

The Burma Liberation Democratic Front (BLDF) announced that it held a graduation ceremony for an organizational training course somewhere in central Myanmar on September 14.
Under the slogan “Organize, Prepare, Fight,” the group said it had conducted training and organizational activities necessary for its operations and released information about the ceremony to inform the public about its activities.
The graduation ceremony consisted of nine programs, including raising the BLDF flag, a military parade by graduating members, saluting the flag, reciting an oath and a graduation speech by the military officer in charge.
Central Committee representatives also delivered remarks. Awards were presented to members who won football, chinlone, general-knowledge and chess competitions before the ceremony concluded.
6. 88 Generation Student Leader U Dein Daung Dies in Myingyan Prison

U Soe Moe Naing, also known as U Dein Daung, an 88 Generation student leader from Mandalay, has died in Myingyan Prison, according to people close to him.
Prison authorities reportedly informed his family that the 61-year-old died after suffering a heart attack on the night of September 15.
Originally from Amarapura, U Dein Daung participated in protests following the 2021 military coup. He was subsequently arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
While detained at Mandalay’s Obo Prison, he reportedly boycotted court proceedings, saying that he had no confidence in the military-controlled judicial system. He was later transferred to Myingyan Prison.
U Dein Daung had a pre-existing heart condition. Myingyan Prison has been criticized by political-prisoner advocates over conditions and alleged mistreatment of political detainees, including reports of inadequate food.
He had participated in political movements spanning several decades, including the 1987 currency protests, the 1988 uprising, the 2007 Saffron Revolution, the Letpadaung protests and the 2015 student protests. He had been arrested and imprisoned several times under successive military governments.
7. NMSP-AD Leaders Meet Mon Business Community in Thailand

Leaders of the New Mon State Party–Anti-Dictatorship (NMSP-AD) met Mon businesspeople and professionals based in Thailand, according to a statement from NMSP-AD/Ramanya Mon.
The meeting was held at an undisclosed location in Thailand on September 13.
NMSP-AD representatives briefed participants on the current political situation, the resistance movement and future plans of the NMSP-AD and the Ramanya Mon Army. Mon businesspeople and young professionals attending the meeting also asked questions and exchanged views with the group’s representatives.
The delegation was led by NMSP-AD Secretary Nai Banyar Lel and included officials responsible for Thai relations, overseas organizing and social relief activities.
More than 40 Mon businesspeople and young professionals living in Thailand reportedly attended.
8. Norwegian Police Investigate Telenor Over Myanmar Case and Search Headquarters

Norwegian police have launched a criminal investigation involving telecommunications company Telenor over allegations concerning the transfer of customer data and surveillance equipment in Myanmar and searched the company’s headquarters on September 15.
Justice For Myanmar (JFM) and the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) Norway had filed complaints concerning Telenor’s conduct following Myanmar’s 2021 military coup.
The complaints concern allegations that information relating to Telenor Myanmar’s more than 18 million customers, as well as surveillance-related technology, was transferred in circumstances that could have made the material accessible to Myanmar’s military authorities.
When Telenor Myanmar was sold to Investcom, a partnership involving M1 Group and Shwe Byain Phyu, the transaction allegedly included interception and surveillance technology subject to European Union sanctions.
Justice For Myanmar spokesperson Yadanar Maung welcomed the Norwegian authorities’ investigation, saying the company should be investigated over whether its conduct contributed to abuses committed by Myanmar’s military.
The complaint was initially filed in 2024 but was rejected. An appeal was subsequently submitted to higher authorities in October 2025. ICJ Norway welcomed the opening of what it described as an independent investigation.
Telenor Myanmar was subsequently renamed ATOM. Shwe Byain Phyu holds an 80 percent stake in the company.
9. Vogue Thailand Removes Photos of Actress Wutt Hmone Shwe Yi Following Criticism

Vogue Thailand removed fashion photographs featuring Myanmar actress Wutt Hmone Shwe Yi within 24 hours of their publication following criticism over alleged business links involving her family and Myanmar’s military leadership.
The photographs were posted on Vogue Thailand’s social-media pages on September 15 as part of a Myanmar fashion feature but were subsequently removed.
Critics pointed to the business activities of Wutt Hmone Shwe Yi’s husband, Naing Phyo Kyaw, also known as Eric Yin. Activists allege that he has business ties with Khin Thiri Thet Mon, daughter of military leader Min Aung Hlaing, including through Seventh Sense film production and other ventures.
Activist groups have also alleged that Naing Phyo Kyaw has accompanied Min Aung Hlaing on overseas trips and maintains close connections with Myanmar’s military leadership.
The appearance of Wutt Hmone Shwe Yi in Vogue Thailand prompted criticism from pro-democracy activists and the film criticism group Cinéma Boulevard, after which the photographs were removed.
Cinéma Boulevard argued that featuring individuals with alleged links to Myanmar’s military establishment was inconsistent with the social-responsibility principles associated with the Vogue brand.
Vogue Thailand operates under a license for the Vogue brand owned by U.S.-based media company Condé Nast.
