📌📌 1. The NUG said that it is concerned about the participation of the terrorist military group in the European Union-ASEAN Civil Society Forum to be held in Belgium

On October 2, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the National Unity Government released a statement on Myanmar junta participation in EU-ASEAN CSOs Forum to be held in Brussels.

The statement is as follows:

“The National Unity Government is deeply concerned to learn of the invitation of the representatives of Myanmar’s illegitimate junta to the EU-ASEAN CSOs Forum “Advancing Human Rights: Creating an Enabling Environment for CSOs at the Regional Level” in Brussels, which is co-organized by the European Union and the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights and will start on 3 October.

The Myanmar junta is brutalizing its own people, murdering civil society activists, health workers, teachers, and schoolchildren alike, and committing war crimes and crimes against humanity. We are dismayed to see the participation of the junta representatives in the EU-ASEAN CSOs Forum, in place of the legitimate, democratically-elected representatives of Myanmar.

This Forum takes place days after Union Minister for Human Rights Aung Myo Min visited Brussels where he met with European Union representatives, among them the EU Special Representative for Human Rights. Minister Aung Myo Min proposed the commencement of a human rights dialogue in Myanmar, with the participation of Myanmar’s democratic institutions, the National Unity Government, the Committee Representing the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, and the National Unity Consultative Council, representatives of Myanmar’s state-level institutions, and representatives of communities and civil society.

We urge the European Union and the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights to engage with the legitimate representatives of the Myanmar people in a genuine human rights dialogue.”
