๐ฉ๐ฉ 1. The Military Junta Coerces Township/Village Administrators in Hlaingbwe to Enlist Soldiers
The military junta has summoned township and village administrators from Hlaingbwe to demand compulsory military conscription, according to a statement released by the Central KNU. Meetings were held at the Hlaingbwe Strategic Office and Township General Administration Office with urban ward administrators (Ka and Ga) and village administrators from Taungshwe, Innnohtheittan, Kamaule, Takhwehpyo, Nokaw, Kwammaung, Myalay, Thayakone, Gyokchaung, Oudaung, Tawunphanya, Kyungpako, and Takenglon villages. The discussions centered on recruiting soldiers.
In these meetings, it was decided that by December 12, 2024, new recruits for military service must be delivered to the strategic office for the 8th round of conscription. Colonel Soe Min Aung directed the village administrators to provide one recruit per village. Those unable to provide a recruit must pay MMK 3 million (approximately $1,430 USD) per person instead. Administrators were warned that failure to comply would result in forcible recruitment by checkpoints at the township’s entry and exit gates.
A follow-up meeting on December 10, 2024, at 3:00 PM reiterated that villages yet to send recruits for the 7th round must do so in the 8th round by December 12. The military’s coercive conscription efforts have left residents deeply fearful and anxious.
