๐ฉ๐ฉ 1. Defense Minister U Yee Mon Attends New Year Sports Event in Resistance-Controlled Territory in Sagaing Region

The National Unity Government (NUG) Defense Minister, U Yee Mon, attended a New Year commemorative sports event held in a territory controlled by resistance forces in the Sagaing Region, according to a statement released by the No. 1 Military District.
The sports event, which involved participation from local PDF (People's Defense Forces) units and local civilians, was reportedly held on January 1. Competitions included sports like football, volleyball, and tug-of-war. Local residents joined alongside People's Defense Force members to partake in the festivities, demonstrating unity between the defense forces and civilians, the statement noted.
Furthermore, the NUG, led by Prime Minister Mahn Win Khaing Than, recently visited Cobra Column, which is part of Operation Strategy-32, led by Battalion Commander Bo Dabo. This column has been conducting offensive operations against the military junta’s Aung Zeya Column in Kayin State during this early part of the year.
Such interactions between high-ranking NUG officials and ground-level resistance forces are seen as morale-boosting moments for both the revolutionaries and the public at large.

๐ฉ๐ฉ 2. “The Loss of a Dedicated Civil Servant in the Assassination of the Kalay Township Natural Resources Committee Secretary,” Says Minister Dr. Tu Khine

Union Minister Dr. Tu Khine commented today on the assassination of the Secretary of the Natural Resources Committee in Kalay Township, Sagaing Region, saying, "We have lost a committed civil servant."
The secretary, U Aryindama, was assassinated on January 2 between Shan Kalone and Shwe Twin villages. Initially reported as a motorcycle accident, further investigation confirmed that he had been shot dead.
Dr. Tu Khine stated, "U Aryindama, a diligent CDM (Civil Disobedience Movement) staff member and ECD (Environmental Conservation Department) officer, was a dedicated worker whose absence is deeply mourned by the MONREC (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation) team, his colleagues, and friends. Our condolences extend to his family, including his daughter. His precision, discipline, and integrity in his work will always be remembered.
Losing such an invaluable civil servant due to the actions of those who cannot tolerate the light in these dark times is a significant loss for the revolutionary government."
It has been reported that the investigation into the shooting of the Natural Resources Committee Secretary in Kalay Township is still ongoing.

๐ฉ๐ฉ 3. KNA Battalion Commander Khun Hla Moe Killed in Moe Byel Battle

The Karenni Nationalities Army (KNA) announced on January 3 that Khun Hla Moe, a battalion commander from Battalion 2104, was killed in the Moe Byel battle.
"Khun Hla Moe of Battalion 2104 heroically gave his life on January 1 while resisting the oppressive junta forces during the Moe Byel battle," the KNA stated.
The KNA expressed deep respect and paid tribute to Commander Khun Hla Moe, who sacrificed his life fighting for federal democracy and the freedom of the Karenni people from military dictatorship.

๐ฉ๐ฉ 4. Approximately 15,000 Displaced Civilians from Bhamo in Need of Emergency Assistance in Moemauk and Dawphoneyan Areas

The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) Information Department reported on the evening of January 2 that around 15,000 displaced civilians from Bhamo are in dire need of emergency assistance due to ongoing clashes in Bhamo, Kachin State.
The fighting between the Kachin Independence Army (KIA)-led allied forces and the military junta in Bhamo has forced many local residents to flee their homes. Although detailed accounts of the battles were not disclosed, it was reported that the military junta’s airstrikes and heavy artillery attacks have caused extensive damage to civilian homes. Displaced civilians are in urgent need of shelter, blankets, clothing, food, and medicine.
The KIA stated that since December 4, residents of Bhamo have fled to safer areas such as Moemauk, Dawphoneyan, and other nearby locations due to continued clashes in Bhamo and Momauk. There are reportedly over 11,000 displaced individuals in Moemauk and over 2,800 in Dawphoneyan.
Displaced individuals are also reportedly facing looting of their abandoned homes. Meanwhile, Kachin military sources revealed that on January 2, clashes occurred near Infantry Battalion 47, the Win Light Hotel, and the central administrative area, during which the junta deployed airstrikes and dropped bombs nine times.
The KIA and allied forces claimed that they caused casualties on the junta’s side and successfully took control of the Bhamo People’s Hospital during these operations. Despite the intensified battles in Bhamo, the junta continues to rely on aerial support to escalate its offensives, while the KIA and allied forces retaliate with artillery and drone strikes.

๐ฉ๐ฉ 5. Victorious PLA Fighters from Northern Shan Welcomed by Thousands of Locals

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) announced that their victorious fighters, who participated in the fierce battles of Operation 1027 in Northern Shan State, were warmly welcomed by thousands of local residents.
On January 2, the PLA troops were received by the local community at a location in the PLA’s No. 1 Military Region. The battles were part of Operation 1027, led by the Tri-Union Alliance, which achieved significant successes during its first and second phases in reclaiming areas such as Theinni, Lashio, Mongmit, and Hsipaw.
On December 29, the victorious PLA troops were also honored by locals in a central region of Upper Myanmar for their successes during the operation.
In addition to resisting the junta forces, the PLA has been actively engaging in social service projects within liberated areas. In late December, they provided medical aid to displaced civilians in Sagaing Region, as part of their monthly health initiatives aimed at supporting residents and displaced individuals in the No. 1 Military Region.

๐ฉ๐ฉ 6. 58 Political Prisoners Killed by Military Junta in 2024

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) reported that 58 political prisoners died in 2024 due to actions by the military junta.
Among those killed were Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, the former Chief Minister of Mandalay Region and Deputy Chair of the National League for Democracy (NLD), as well as former Electric Power Minister U Win Khaing.
According to AAPP, from January 1 to December 31, 2024, a total of 406 individuals were arrested and executed by the junta. Among them, 12 died in police custody, 15 in military interrogation camps, and 15 in prisons. The AAPP noted that the actual number of deaths is likely higher than reported.
The junta has intensified its suppression of political prisoners as its military losses increase, according to AAPP, which released its findings under the title "Life Behind Bars Under the Junta."
From the coup on February 1, 2021, to January 2, 2025, the junta and its affiliates have been responsible for the deaths of 6,092 pro-democracy activists and civilians. Over 28,000 people have been arrested, with more than 21,000 still detained and nearly 10,000 serving prison sentences.
