๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ 1. KNU Reports Junta's Continued Shelling of Civilian Areas Despite Declared Ceasefire

April 4 | Radio NUG

The Karen National Union (KNU) has reported that the Myanmar military junta continued shelling civilian areas in Hpapun District, Karen State, immediately after announcing a ceasefire.

On April 2, the junta declared a temporary ceasefire from April 2 to April 22, claiming it aimed to prioritize earthquake relief efforts and ensure stability. However, the KNU revealed today (April 4) that the junta immediately violated its own ceasefire declaration by launching artillery attacks on civilian areas.

According to reports:

  • On April 2, at 5:00 PM, junta forces from Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 350 and LIB 440 shelled Nyaung Chay Htauk village, Shwe Kyin Township with 81mm mortar rounds, damaging civilian homes.
  • On April 3, around 11:00 AM, LIB 351 fired artillery into Nget Htoe Sut Village, Mu Township, injuring a 24-year-old woman and destroying two houses.

Despite declaring a ceasefire, the junta continued using airstrikes and drone bombings while civilians were still suffering from the earthquake's devastation. The KNU described the ceasefire announcement as nothing more than a deceptive publicity stunt, emphasizing that the junta deliberately targets civilian areas.

The temporary ceasefire declaration coincided with the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, which the junta leader Min Aung Hlaing is attending. The KNU accused the junta of using the ceasefire as a strategic move to gain international legitimacy while continuing its attacks on civilians.

  • On April 2, in the morning, resistance fighters detonated mines near Paung Tait Su Village, striking a junta vehicle.
  • As the convoy was disoriented and in disarray, resistance fighters engaged in a 15-minute gunfight, forcing the remaining troops to retreat towards LIB-6's base.

April 4 | Radio NUG

Two junta soldiers from LIB-269, stationed in Tedim, Chin State, defected to PDF Zoland along with their weapons and ammunition, according to the resistance group.

The defectors:

  • Phoe Khwar (23 years old)
  • Second Corporal Myo Min Kyaw (22 years old)

They surrendered with weapons and ammunition on April 3, seeking asylum with PDF Zoland. The group released photographic evidence confirming the defection and provided financial rewards to the two soldiers.
