Radio NUG

On June 21 evening, Burmese families from the San Francisco Bay Area, California, United States, gathered to commemorate the 80th birthday of Myanmar’s national leader, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. The event was held at the Overseas Myanmar Community Center (OMC), a regular venue for Myanmar-related events in the Bay Area, and was attended by over a hundred Burmese families.

The event was led by young Generation Z girls, who served as emcees and led the proceedings. Activities included messages of tribute, prayers for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s health and freedom, poetry recitations by children, commemorative song performances, birthday cake-cutting, and candlelight prayers. Guests shared heartfelt tributes, including personal experiences related to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Daw Saw Myat Mar, a former political prisoner, recounted:

"Let me share one last vivid memory. I had already spent three years in prison. Even after those three years, interrogation teams were still calling us out for questioning. When they did, they wrapped our heads in thick blankets, took us into vehicles, and drove us away. We had no idea where we were being taken. It was terrifying. I said, 'Mother...' and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi looked at me with a gentle smile and said, 'Don’t be afraid… don’t even fear the darkness. When fear arises, remember—you have two fists. Whenever you see darkness, clench your fists tightly. Draw strength from them… strength that is fearless, strength that is courageous.'

From then on, I reflected—at this moment, how tightly must she be clenching her fists? Drawing strength not just for herself, but for her people, standing firm in her national duty. I imagine even now, whether inside or outside prison, she continues to give us strength.”

Across the globe, Burmese families are holding commemorative events and campaigns calling for the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s national leader who remains unjustly imprisoned by the military regime. Similarly, ethnic Burmese communities in New York City have also held gatherings to mark her 80th birthday.
