June 2
Two members of the SAC forces who were extorting money from civilian vehicles were shot dead at close range.
According to a statement released by The Phoenix Army, two SAC personnel from Basic Education High School (1) in Monywa, Sagaing Region—who had come out to unlawfully collect money from public vehicles—were taken out in a close-range clearance operation at 11:11 a.m. on June 1.
“They were extorting money from civilian vehicles on a daily basis. Sometimes they demanded as much as 10,000 kyats per vehicle, saying it was for some so-called ‘heartbreaking cause.’ Even when drivers explained they couldn’t pay, the soldiers kept demanding by force. That’s what we heard directly from the public, and that’s why the operation was carried out,” the statement noted.
The joint operation was conducted by:
- The Phoenix Army
- Monywa District Battalion No. 17, Unit 3 (MYF)
- Monywa District Battalion No. 15, Unit 5 (WMW)
