The Kyunhla-Kantbalu Activist Group reported today (September 1) that junta troops in Kantbalu Township, Sagaing Region, brutally murdered two internally displaced persons (a husband and wife) and set fire to refugee shelters.

According to the statement, at 8:30 AM on August 31, soldiers and Pyu Saw Htee militias from the Kyat Thin base camp launched an operation toward Ponna Gyi village, during which they carried out a drone attack, dropping four bombs on U Kin Kyi and Nyo Kone villages.

The column of about 100 soldiers then encountered 45-year-old U Zaw Myo Hlaing and his 44-year-old wife Daw Ma Ma Thin, who had fled from Ponna Gyi due to earlier raids. The couple was shot and killed on the spot, and four makeshift IDP shelters were torched and destroyed.

When the column reached the eastern side of Ponna Gyi village around 10:00 AM, they were ambushed by members of Kantbalu District Battalion 2 together with local defense forces. At least seven junta soldiers were seriously wounded in the clash.

Reports indicate that five of the injured were carried away on ox-carts, while the remaining two were evacuated on stretchers.
