His appointment comes at a moment of great uncertainty in the world. The Myanmar people look to the Holy Father as a symbol of peace and justice. They see him as a voice for the poor, the marginalized, the homeless, and those suffering in hardship. World leaders have also issued statements congratulating Pope Leo XIV on his appointment. Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States was elected as the new pope in May.

At the meeting, the Acting President emphasized that China's mediation in Myanmar must not prolong the military dictatorship. He stated that China's involvement should not enable the junta's continued rule, and that the NUG and ethnic revolutionary forces must demand just and appropriate principles in any Chinese mediation efforts. He further emphasized the need for the NUG to respond to China's perspectives on the government. Acknowledging China's perspective, he stressed the importance of clarifying that the NUG is not an adversary and poses no threat to China's interests. The acting president reiterated that the NUG does not intend to harm China's interests, and clear communication is vital. 3. The Union Prime Minister of the National Unity Government, Mann Win Khaing Than gave a remark on the fourth anniversary of the People’s Defense Force (PDF), which falls on May 5th. Speaking on the occasion, the Union Prime Minister said that the PDF has now established operational areas across the country and is developing into a well-organized, disciplined force of the people’s military. It is encouraging to see the PDF striving to become a structured people’s military. He acknowledged the PDF's commitment to citizen protection and ending the military dictatorship, highlighting their enhanced capabilities since their formation and honoring all contributors to its strength. He expressed his desire to commend all those involved. On this fourth anniversary, the PDF demonstrates greater readiness and capacity than ever before. The growth of this force with its strong military and organizational capabilities is truly admirable. The People’s Defense Force was officially formed on May 5, 2021, and marked its fourth year of revolution in 2025.

The Chairman of the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), U Aung Kyi Nyunt, and the Chair of the CRPH's International Relations Committee, Daw Myat Thida Tun, met with the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Southeast Asia and ASEAN Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, Mr. Andrew R. Herrup, on April 29. During the meeting, Deputy Assistant Secretary Herrup expressed his condolences to the people of Myanmar affected by the recent earthquake and pledged humanitarian assistance to those impacted. He also conveyed his respect for the resilience and sacrifices of the Myanmar people in their ongoing struggle for democracy. The CRPH Chairman briefed on the political situation, including revolutionary forces' territorial control, and denounced the military's sham elections. They urged the US to strengthen sanctions, particularly on aviation fuel, and requested continued support for establishing an inclusive federal democracy in Myanmar. The meeting fostered a positive exchange on Myanmar's situation and explored ways for the international community to continue standing in solidarity with the Myanmar people.

5. The National Unity Government (NUG) released a summary of its diplomatic achievements to mark the fourth anniversary of the establishment of its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, May 8. The report highlights the appointment of representatives in ASEAN member states, Australia, the Czech Republic, India, Japan, South Korea, Norway, France, and the United Kingdom to advance its foreign policy. In June 2024, the NUG successfully opened a representative office in Dili, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, with the appointment of a Deputy Chief of Mission. Similarly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the National Unity Government was also opened in Washington, DC, USA. Internationally, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun continues as Myanmar's Permanent Representative to the UN, recognized as the legitimate voice of the Myanmar people and actively pursuing the ministry's diplomatic objectives with relevant organizations and member states.

On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, May 3, the National Unity Government (NUG) reaffirmed it will continue to work with all revolutionary forces to strengthen the right of independent media to access information and further expand the public's right to information, in line with the previously announced positions on press freedom and media. The NUG emphasized that Freedom of expression and freedom of the press are vital components of the ongoing revolution to end military dictatorship and establish a federal democratic union that reflects the will of the people. It condemned the junta's systematic suppression of the media through censorship, arrests, torture, and killings of journalists, designed to silence truth and conceal information. Since the February 1, 2021 coup, at least seven journalists have been killed and over 200 unlawfully arrested in Myanmar. About 40 remain imprisoned, while others have been forced into exile due to the junta's life-threatening environment. The NUG has strongly condemned the military regime's repression of the media, including arbitrary arrests, torture, killings, and threats against journalists and media outlets.
