On May 21, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management announced that it had provided psychological support and humanitarian assistance to those affected by the aerial bombing of the school in Ohtain Twin Village, located in Dipeyin Township, by the military junta.

A support and counseling session was held with the participation of Union and Deputy Ministers and officials from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, along with child psychologists and mental health professionals. During the session, they conducted trauma-informed counseling, provided emotional and psychological support to bereaved families, children, and teachers, and shared techniques to help alleviate anxiety, fear, and emotional distress.

The Ministry provided 10.5 million MMK in emergency financial aid to the families of the deceased and injured. Local administrative bodies and volunteers donated an additional 13 million MMK, bringing the total support to 23.5 million MMK, which was personally delivered by members of the township administrative team.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 2. UK Minister Condemns School Airstrike and Calls for End to Aerial Attacks

UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific, Catherine West, expressed deep shock and concern over the military junta’s aerial bombing of a school in Dipeyin Township, Sagaing Region, and called for an immediate cessation of such airstrikes.

Referring to reports of the airstrike, Minister West stated, “It is extremely disturbing to hear that the Myanmar military has carried out an airstrike on a school in an earthquake-affected area during a declared ceasefire period. Schools should be safe spaces that provide opportunities—not targets in conflict. We urge all relevant authorities, especially the Myanmar military, to immediately halt these aerial attacks, ensure the protection of civilians, and safeguard civilian infrastructure.”

The airstrike, which occurred on the morning of May 12 in Ohtain Twin Village, Dipeyin Township, resulted in the deaths of 24 individuals, including teachers and students. According to ground-level reports, 102 people were injured in the attack.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 3. Call for Exclusion of Myanmar Junta from 46th ASEAN Summit

Organizations, including Defend Myanmar Democracy, have called for the exclusion of the Myanmar military junta from the upcoming 46th ASEAN Summit.

The summit is scheduled to be held from May 23 to 27 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where leaders from all ten ASEAN member states are expected to convene to discuss key topics such as ASEAN’s 2025 vision, disaster response and humanitarian aid, trade cooperation with China and GCC countries, and the ongoing crisis in Myanmar.

Despite ASEAN’s stated commitment to “inclusive participation,” the statement points out that in practice, the bloc has continued to provide platforms for the military junta, which has carried out over 4,000 airstrikes across Myanmar in the past two years—displacing 3.5 million people and committing countless war crimes. Meanwhile, the legitimate representatives of the Myanmar people have been systematically excluded.

The statement urges ASEAN leaders to:

Exclude the Myanmar military junta from the summit,

Engage only with legitimate representatives of Myanmar,

And end ASEAN’s enabling role in the junta’s war crimes.
