๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 3. Defend Myanmar Democracy highlights ASEAN’s ineffectiveness in addressing Myanmar’s crisis

Defend Myanmar Democracy has stated that ASEAN’s actions in relation to the Myanmar issue have been ineffective.

It noted that when Myanmar joined ASEAN in 1997 under the military dictatorship of former Senior General Than Shwe, the regime was still perpetrating oppression against civilians. Nevertheless, ASEAN recognized the military regime as the legitimate government and admitted Myanmar as a member state—an act which, according to the group, amounted to tacit endorsement of the junta’s crimes.

At present, although ASEAN has restricted political representatives from Myanmar from attending ASEAN Summits since 2021, in 2024 and 2025 it permitted a delegation led by U Aung Kyaw Moe, Permanent Deputy Minister of the junta’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to attend at a “non-political” level.

Furthermore, the group pointed out that ambassadors and officials from ASEAN member states have continued to hold both official and unofficial meetings with top junta figures, including junta leader Min Aung Hlaing, on numerous occasions.

It also noted that while ASEAN chairmanships continue to adhere to the “Five-Point Consensus” agreed upon in 2021 for resolving Myanmar’s conflict, in practice this has yielded no tangible results. ASEAN has continued to ignore demands from revolutionary forces and civil society organizations that represent the voice of the Myanmar people.

The group concluded that ASEAN’s actions expose a wide gap between stated objectives on paper and actual implementation, raising increasing questions about ASEAN’s role in addressing Myanmar’s crisis.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 5. Family informed more than six months after a conscripted youth’s death at the frontline in Taunggyi

TGI Support Revolution reported that a young man from Lanmadaw Ward, Taunggyi, who was forcibly conscripted in Batch 1, was killed at the frontline, but his family was only informed more than six months later.

The victim, Maung Chan Myay Aung (aka Aung Aung), aged 31, was forcibly taken and sent for Batch 1 military service in April 2024 by the ward administrator and clerk through coercion and deception.

About six months ago, he died at the frontline near Lashio City in northern Shan State. His family was only notified last week, after which they were belatedly allowed to hold his funeral.

Of the 5 million kyat given by the junta as “military service compensation” for the youth, the ward administrator and clerk kept 4.2 million kyat, giving the family only 800,000 kyat. Despite repeated objections, the family was coerced into signing an unlawful acknowledgment of receipt.

It was also reported that conscripted youths from Kyauk Gyi Su, Yadanar Thiri, Kan Thar, Sein Pan, Nyaung Phyu Sakhan, and Chan Mya Thar Si Wards in Taunggyi Township have frequently died at the frontline, but their families are often informed only long after their deaths.
