๐๐ 1. KNU declares total rejection of sham elections designed to serve the military
August 26
The Karen National Union (KNU) Central Committee announced today, August 26, that it completely rejects the elections organized by the military, as they are nothing more than a sham process aimed at selecting individuals and parties that serve the military’s interests.
According to the KNU’s statement, the military’s planned election is entirely illegitimate under the law, excludes the full participation of the people, and is conducted through a process that allows arbitrary manipulation of results.
The KNU stressed that such elections are solely intended to prolong military dictatorship, do not offer any solution to the country’s current political crisis, and would instead intensify internal conflict and perpetuate regional instability.
The organization further pointed out that the military’s attempt to hold elections is merely a tactic to cover up its failure to implement ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus.
The KNU also emphasized that participation of political parties in these sham elections would obstruct the establishment of a future Federal Democratic system.
It warned that by participating, political parties and the public risk becoming complicit in legitimizing military rule, prolonging dictatorship, and reviving the 2008 Constitution — a course of action that would amount to a betrayal of history. The KNU therefore urged all sides to actively avoid involvement by all possible means.
The KNU further called on Karen communities, Karen armed organizations, Karen political forces, political parties, and the entire public to resist the junta’s sham elections through non-violent means.
The statement concluded that only elections held under a new Federal Democratic Constitution — drafted and ratified through an inclusive political dialogue involving all stakeholders and aimed at delivering a long-term political settlement — will be capable of bringing an end to Myanmar’s deeply rooted political conflicts.
