๐ฉ๐ฉ 1. AA Launches Coordinated Offensive Against Military Regime Camps in Ann and Gwa
December 19
The Arakan Army (AA) announced that it has launched a coordinated offensive against military regime camps located in Ann and Gwa townships in Rakhine State.
Following the successful capture of all military regime camps in Maungdaw and Taungup, the AA has shifted its focus to assaulting the camps in Ann and Gwa. The group confirmed these developments in a recent statement.
In Ann, the headquarters of the Western Regional Military Command is reportedly nearing full capture, with only certain parts of the regional command office remaining under the military’s control. Approximately 100 regime soldiers are stationed at the headquarters and are said to be putting up fierce resistance against the AA’s attacks.
The AA has intensified its offensive with the aim of fully taking over the Western Regional Military Command in Ann. The clashes remain intense as regime forces, numbering in the hundreds, continue to defend their positions within the command center.
Additionally, the regime military has been incessantly shelling AA positions from the Rakhine Yoma mountain range, resulting in explosions that have caused casualties and injuries among their own troops, according to the AA.
The military junta has also conducted relentless airstrikes and ground-based artillery attacks, further escalating the intensity of the battles.
Amid the ongoing clashes, the AA reported that some regime soldiers in the vicinity of the Western Regional Military Command have been surrendering with white flags. The AA reiterated its guarantee of safety for those who surrender, stating, “Surrender early to ensure survival. The sooner you surrender, the sooner you can reunite with your family and loved ones.” This message has been issued consistently for three consecutive days.
In Gwa Township, heavy fighting also continues. The AA claims to have seized large quantities of weapons, ammunition, and the bodies of regime soldiers during the battles.

December 19
Lieutenant Colonel Aung Naing Myo, commander of Battalion 22 under Border Guard Unit 5 (BGF-5) in Maungdaw Township, Rakhine State, reportedly died after stepping on a landmine laid by his own military. He was attempting to flee towards Bangladesh when the incident occurred, according to a statement released by the Arakan Army (AA).
The AA recently captured the last remaining BGF-5 base in Maungdaw on December 8. Following the seizure, AA forces pursued regime soldiers, including Lieutenant Colonel Aung Naing Myo, who had refused to surrender and fled the area.
On December 17, the AA apprehended the lieutenant colonel near a shrimp pond hut close to Shwezarkapauk Creek in Maungdaw. He was found dead upon capture, along with approximately 80 million kyats in cash, gold bars, and gold ornaments, according to the AA.
The AA reported that the lieutenant colonel had attempted to flee to Bangladesh with the assistance of local Muslims who have historically collaborated with the regime. However, his escape was thwarted by the AA’s security forces and coastal patrols, leaving him trapped. Ultimately, he stepped on a landmine set by his own forces, resulting in his death from excessive bleeding.
Lieutenant Colonel Aung Naing Myo was a graduate of the 41st batch of the Myanmar Defense Services Academy and was recently honored on January 4 of this year with the “Outstanding Soldier” medal by military leader Min Aung Hlaing for his service and performance.
