๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 1. Myanmar Faces Critical Humanitarian Crisis: NUG's Foreign Minister

December 19

Myanmar is currently experiencing one of the most severe humanitarian crises, according to Daw Zin Mar Aung, the Foreign Minister of the National Unity Government (NUG), who made this statement on December 19 via social media.

"Our motherland is facing an unprecedented level of humanitarian aid necessity in my lifetime. The nation and its people have been devastated, while a small group or a single family is still not content with holding absolute power. Escaping from this dire situation as quickly as possible is our only option," the minister stated.

Myanmar is now facing its worst food insecurity crisis in decades, with the population struggling to meet basic needs due to escalating conflicts, economic collapse, and other threats, as reported by UN OCHA Myanmar.

In 2024, limited funding has left 1.4 million people without any form of aid, out of the 5.3 million targeted for assistance. Humanitarian organizations plan to provide emergency food aid to 1.8 million people in 2025.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 5. Myanmar Workers Peacefully Protesting at a Thai Factory Beaten and Arrested by Authorities

December 19

At a factory in Samut Sakhon, Thailand, about 300 Myanmar workers were peacefully protesting for fair reductions in fees for work and residency permit renewals, which had been raised to as much as 10,000 Thai Baht. The workers were violently beaten and arrested by Thai police and local security forces, according to reports.

The incident occurred on the morning of December 19 at a factory near Pikhansin Road in the Ong Rai area of Samut Sakhon District. The factory owner reportedly summoned Thai police and security forces, who then forcefully beat and detained the peaceful Myanmar protesters. Four workers were arrested during the crackdown.

The use of excessive force against peaceful protesters by Thai authorities is a violation of human and labor rights and tarnishes Thailand's reputation, said Aye Min, an activist for Myanmar workers' rights in Thailand, in comments to local news outlets.

While negotiations at other factories in Thailand have concluded peacefully, the actions of this factory owner in suppressing workers' rights with ample evidence of wrongdoing are unacceptable, Aye Min added.

Myanmar workers in Thailand are also facing high fees for permit renewals due to cooperation between the Myanmar military junta and Thai authorities, who are reportedly collecting taxes from the workers, according to reports.
