3. According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), 58 political prisoners were killed by a military junta in 2024. According to documents, the deceased include former Mandalay Region Chief Minister Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, who also serves as the NLD's Vice Chairman, and former Union Minister of Electricity U Win Khaing. According to AAPP data, the military junta detained and killed 406 people between January 1 and December 31, 2024, including 12 in police stations, 15 in military interrogation camps, and 15 in military prisons, with the true number likely higher. According to the AAPP, as the military junta loses the war, it has begun to murder political prisoners more brutally. The military junta, in control for nearly four years, has lost much of its territory and is torturing and killing political prisoners it has arrested. According to the AAPP statement, brutal human rights violations are systematically carried out in prisons and interrogation camps, and political prisoners are held in military-run police stations, interrogation camps, and prisons, where they are subjected to various forms of mental, physical, and sexual torture. As a result, AAPP urges the international community to immediately release all political prisoners, including President U Win Myint and State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, without legitimizing the terrorist military junta, and to apply effective pressure on the terrorist military junta and hold them accountable for committing international crimes. During the military coup, which took place from February 1, 2021, to January 2, 2025, a total of 6,092 democracy activists and civilians were killed by the violent military junta and its henchmen.
