๐๐ 1. NUG to Take Legal Action Against Military Junta at International Courts for Airstrikes on Bagan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
February 17
Radio NUG
On February 13, 2025, at approximately 7:00 AM, the terrorist military junta’s air force conducted airstrikes between Jo Kan Village and Kyauk Pyin Kan Village in the Bagan region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the days leading up to the attack, the junta had also carried out large-scale military offensives in villages within the Bagan heritage zone, deploying hundreds of troops and forcibly conscripting local youths into portering. This information was released by the Interim Central Committee for Heritage Management under the National Unity Government (NUG).
The deliberate targeting and destruction of irreplaceable heritage sites constitute an attack on the historical and cultural assets of the people and represent an inhumane act. As Myanmar is a signatory to both the Geneva Convention and The Hague Convention, the military junta's actions violate international laws by attacking civilian sites protected under the Geneva Convention and committing war crimes under The Hague Convention by targeting cultural heritage sites. Additionally, these actions breach Article 19(a) of Myanmar’s Law on the Protection and Preservation of Ancient Buildings.
In response, the National Unity Government strongly condemns the junta’s actions and has announced that it will pursue legal measures at both international and domestic courts to hold the perpetrators accountable.

According to Thai military and other sources, the teenage victim had applied for a job through social media and left Japan for Thailand in December. He was later taken to a Chinese-run scam operation near the Thai border in Myanmar, where he was coerced into participating in fraudulent activities targeting Japanese nationals.
Earlier this month, the young Japanese man contacted the Japanese police through his family to seek assistance. Following Japan’s request, Thai authorities facilitated his transfer from Myanmar to Thailand on Wednesday.
A similar case occurred last month, when a 17-year-old Japanese high school student was deceived by a 29-year-old acquaintance he had met through an online game. The student was coerced into engaging in scams in Myanmar but was later placed under protective custody in Thailand.
