๐ฉ๐ฉ 3. UWSA Declares That Wa National Literature and Ethnic Languages Can Be Taught in Schools and Bans Child Recruitment Before Completing Primary Education
The United Wa State Army (UWSA) has announced that all schools within its controlled territories will offer instruction in Wa National Literature alongside the respective languages of local ethnic groups. Additionally, the recruitment of children who have not completed primary education into the military is strictly prohibited, according to an official from the UWSA Political Department's Education Committee, who spoke to the Wa Youth Voice Network.
This directive was established following the 2024 Central Year-End Meeting and has been incorporated into the eight key educational policies set for implementation in 2025.
Under these educational policies, initiatives include reducing illiteracy rates, ensuring all school-aged children receive an education, establishing a primary school in every village cluster, opening post-primary schools at the township and brigade levels, and setting up middle and high schools in districts and special administrative zones.
Furthermore, the curriculum mandates that Burmese, Wa, and Chinese languages must be taught. Other languages may also be included in the curriculum. Burmese-language textbooks must follow those published by the Myanmar government, while Wa-language materials must adhere to textbooks issued by the Wa State Education Department's Wa Literature Research Division. For Chinese, students up to middle school will use textbooks published by the Wa State Education Committee, while high school students will use materials from China.
Wa State is home to 18 officially recognized ethnic groups, and ethnic communities will be allowed to teach their respective languages and globally used languages, such as English, as separate subjects.
Additionally, individuals or organizations wishing to establish private schools or training centers within Wa State must apply for an official license. As long as they comply with established regulations, they are granted the freedom to operate educational institutions.
