March 6
Radio NUG
On the morning of March 6, during a joint military exercise conducted near Pocheon, 25 kilometers from the North Korean border, two KF-16 fighter jets from the South Korean Air Force mistakenly dropped bombs in a civilian area near the border. The incident resulted in injuries to at least 15 people, according to reports.
The accident was caused by an incorrectly entered coordinate by one of the pilots, leading to the unintended release of eight MK-82 bombs, each weighing 500 pounds, during a pre-flight preparation session.
Among the injured were civilians, military personnel, one Myanmar national, and a Thai national. Two civilians sustained serious injuries, but their conditions are reportedly not life-threatening. The explosion also caused significant damage to military-related buildings, temples, residential houses, and warehouses. Authorities have relocated affected residents to safer areas.
While live-fire exercises have been temporarily suspended, the broader Freedom Shield military exercise is still set to commence on March 10 as originally scheduled.
The South Korean Air Force expressed deep regret over the incident, stating:
"We sincerely apologize for the mistake that resulted in civilian injuries. We hope for their swift recovery. A special committee has been formed to investigate the incident and address the damages, including compensation for those affected."
