๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 1. NUG Ministry of Women, Youth, and Children Affairs Disburses Over 27 Million Kyats in Sectoral Support

April 27

The Ministry of Women, Youth, and Children Affairs under the National Unity Government (NUG) has disbursed over 27 million kyats in support across various sectors, according to Union Minister Naw Susanna Hla Hla Soe.

This announcement was made during the regular coordination meeting of the Union Assembly Representative Committee (CRPH) held on April 25, where the Ministry provided updates on its recent activities and outlined plans for future initiatives.

The Ministry clarified that its efforts focus on three primary objectives: protecting the rights of women, youth, and children; fulfilling their essential needs; and promoting their participation in the federal democratic process. To this end, it has formed five key departments and has been implementing related activities.

Additionally, the Ministry has been working collaboratively with relevant ministries, ground strike committees, and women’s organizations on several initiatives, including providing legal protection for women, youth, and children unlawfully detained by the military junta; organizing campaigns for women’s peace and security guidelines; and promoting effective measures to address sexual violence in conflict-affected areas during the revolution.

Support efforts also extend to women, including breastfeeding mothers displaced from their homes, providing them with childbirth expenses, medicines, food supplies, and financial assistance. Victims of sexual violence are receiving financial, psychological, social, and healthcare support.

In the area of mental health assistance, the Ministry is implementing a Counselling Programme led by trained volunteer professionals. Moreover, vocational skills training is being provided through the Ministry’s various support departments, and collaborative efforts have been made to develop child protection guidelines during earthquake emergencies.

Simultaneously, the Ministry has established the “Justice Path” Telegram Channel, operated by experienced volunteer lawyers, to provide legal assistance. Ongoing training and learning programs are also being conducted in cooperation with relevant ministries and other organizations.

The meeting was attended by the CRPH Chairperson, Secretary, and members, as well as Union Ministers and officials from the Ministry of Women, Youth, and Children Affairs.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 2. ND-Burma: Forced Conscription and Deployment of Women to Conflict Zones Poses Grave Risks to Their Safety and Lives

April 27

Registering women for conscription and deploying them to conflict zones poses serious concerns for their safety and lives, the Network for Human Rights Documentation – Burma (ND-Burma) announced today.

ND-Burma released an abbreviated version of its report titled “Impacts on Women Due to Forced Military Conscription by the Junta” on April 27. It stated that the military junta, which had already been forcibly conscripting young men, has now been attempting to conscript women as well.

According to the report’s findings, women detained under forced conscription orders face grave risks while under custody, and their safety and lives would be further endangered if deployed to frontline battle zones.

The report also indicated that, as the junta continues to lose territorial control and faces increased defections among its soldiers, it has intensified efforts to forcibly conscript women aged between 18 and 27.

Although the military council officially announced that women would not be subject to conscription when it ratified the People’s Military Service Law in February 2024, reports of women being forcibly registered for military service emerged early this year. This development has caused widespread anxiety among families and heightened concerns about the safety and survival of women and girls, according to ND-Burma.

ND-Burma, established in 2004, consists of nine full member organizations and four associate member groups, comprising ethnic nationality organizations, women’s organizations, and former political prisoners. The network documents human rights violations in Burma to ensure accountability and justice for victims and perpetrators alike.
