๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 1. NUG Warns That Political Parties Participating in Junta's Election Under the 2008 Constitution Will Be Seen as Complicit in Oppressing the People

May 10
Radio NUG

The National Unity Government (NUG) has issued a warning that if any political party chooses to participate in the upcoming earthquake-time election held under the 2008 Nargis Constitution, they will be regarded by the people as parties that ignore public suffering and willfully support the military dictatorship and its illegitimate, sham electoral process.

According to NUG’s announcement, political parties must understand that entering such an election, orchestrated by a terrorist military regime to prolong its rule, means disregarding the hardships of the people and undermining their will. These parties will be judged by the public as collaborators of the oppressive junta.

The current period is marked by a deepening crisis across political, economic, and social sectors—stemming from the military’s attempt to unlawfully seize power. Over the past four years since the coup, the people have endured the COVID-19 pandemic, devastating floods, the ravages of war, daily airstrikes, arbitrary arrests and killings, arson and destruction of property, and forced conscription by an illegitimate regime.

Additionally, 17.4 million people across four regions and one state have been further affected by the catastrophic Sagaing earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale. In such a dire context, NUG has stressed that conducting an election is entirely inappropriate.

Nevertheless, in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, the junta astonishingly reiterated its plan to hold a sham election in December 2025—an act that blatantly disregards the sovereign will and suffering of the people and instead prioritizes its own self-serving ambitions.

Given that the people are grappling with war and earthquake-related devastation, NUG believes they will not be interested in a fraudulent election held by the junta. It has therefore urged and advised political parties not to participate in such an election that disregards the suffering of the public and serves only the discredited military regime.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 3. NUCC Clarifies Decisions Are Made Only by 65% Majority, Not Dominated by Any Single Group

May 10
Radio NUG

The National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) has clarified that decisions within the council are not monopolized by any single group. Instead, a proportional voting system is in place, whereby decisions require a 65% consensus among member organizations.

Under this structure, the five major stakeholder groups contribute as follows:

Ethnic revolutionary organizations – 25%

Interim state/federal units and ethnic representative councils – 25%

Elected parliamentary representatives including those from the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) – 25%

Political parties – 10%

Spring Revolution groups – 15%

NUCC stated that this structure ensures equitable power-sharing and collective leadership. It promotes inclusive decision-making and consensus-building among all stakeholders—deemed critically important for the unity of the democratic movement.

The Spring Revolution Groups (SRGs) referenced include unions, women’s organizations, youth groups, minority associations, civil society groups, civil servants participating in the CDM (Civil Disobedience Movement), and public protest networks.

Radio NUG

Junta leader Min Aung Hlaing met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Moscow, Russia, on May 9. According to Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning, China urged Myanmar to engage in its political affairs with “great prudence and a broad perspective.”

President Xi reportedly expressed support for Myanmar’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and stability, and pledged assistance for reconstruction efforts following the recent earthquake. He also requested the Myanmar junta to ensure the security of Chinese personnel and development projects and called for stronger cooperation to eliminate transboundary crimes, including online gambling and telecommunications fraud, according to China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency.

Min Aung Hlaing, in response, reaffirmed his commitment to cooperation with China in economic and energy sectors and pledged to guarantee the safety of Chinese personnel and investments in Myanmar “to the fullest extent.”

Additionally, pro-junta propaganda has claimed that President Xi endorsed the junta-organized elections scheduled to be held by the end of this year. However, no official Chinese statements or announcements have been found to explicitly support this claim.

This meeting not only underscored China’s regional influence but also represented the junta’s attempt to alleviate its growing international isolation.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 7. People’s Defense Forces Assist Earthquake Victims

May 10
Radio NUG

People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) under the command of the Ministry of Defense of the National Unity Government (NUG) have been actively engaged in rescue, relief, and reconstruction efforts to assist civilians affected by recent earthquakes, according to a report from Voice of the PDFs.

In response to the hardships faced by people impacted by the natural disaster, PDF units and defense groups have been coordinating closely with local revolutionary organizations in their respective territories to provide support with all available resources. This action follows instructions issued by NUG’s Union Minister of Defense, U Yee Mon, on March 28, directing all defense personnel and units to do everything within their capacity to assist the victims.

PDF battalions and township defense forces in regions such as Sagaing, Mandalay, and Bago collaborated with Township Pa Ah Pha (PaAF), Township Pa La Pha (PaLF), local PDFs, and regional defense groups to conduct rapid search-and-rescue operations for those killed or injured in the earthquake across their respective territories.

Beginning on March 29, following the major earthquake, these groups have provided assistance to the deceased and injured, and have worked to clear debris from collapsed stupas, pagodas, monasteries, residential buildings, and roads using manpower, machinery, and even elephants. They have also distributed basic necessities and financial aid to households struggling to meet their daily needs, and have delivered medical care in coordination with relevant ministries.

These updates were reported by Radio NUG correspondents Tharki and Khur Shel.
