๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 1. NUG Urges ASEAN to Engage Directly with Resistance Forces That Control Nearly 80% of Myanmar's Territory

May 29

The National Unity Government (NUG) of Myanmar has called on ASEAN to engage directly with revolutionary forces and ethnic resistance organizations that now effectively control and govern nearly 80% of the country’s territory.

This appeal follows a recent statement issued by ASEAN leaders aimed at helping resolve the ongoing political crisis in Myanmar. In response, the NUG emphasized the necessity of establishing direct cooperation in territories administered by these resistance forces.

The NUG welcomed ASEAN’s call to:

Immediately halt violence against civilians and public infrastructure;

Cease all forms of indiscriminate attacks;

Ensure the protection and security of all civilians through decisive and concrete action.

Although the NUG previously declared a temporary ceasefire in areas affected by earthquakes to facilitate humanitarian rescue operations, the junta has continued launching daily attacks during this period—including indiscriminate airstrikes, heavy artillery shelling, arson attacks on civilian homes, and unlawful killings of civilians. The NUG condemned these ongoing atrocities by the junta.

The NUG also expressed its belief that ensuring the safety of all civilians cannot be achieved effectively without the establishment of a systematic and internationally coordinated monitoring and protection mechanism under ASEAN’s leadership.

Furthermore, the NUG welcomed ASEAN’s humanitarian support efforts, which are based on needs assessments by ASEAN-ERAT and the AHA Centre. The NUG emphasized that such aid must be safe, timely, effective, and transparent, in full alignment with international humanitarian standards.

The NUG also urged ASEAN to incorporate assessments and situation reports provided by the NUG and ethnic resistance organizations in the implementation of these humanitarian operations.

In addition, the NUG pledged full cooperation with ASEAN and the United Nations to address the rise of transnational crimes linked to Myanmar, particularly narcotics trafficking, human trafficking, and online scams. The NUG committed to working closely with ASEAN member states and neighboring countries to address these challenges effectively.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 2. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s 80th Birthday Commemoration to Be Held in Front of the Norwegian Parliament in Oslo

May 29

A birthday event commemorating the 80th birthday of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will be held in front of the Norwegian Parliament building in Oslo, Norway.

The celebration will take place at two locations in Norway. The first event will be held on the lawn in front of the Parliament on June 19—Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday—starting at 5:30 PM local time.

Human rights advocacy groups from Ukraine are expected to join the gathering and voice their demands. According to CRPH Support Groups Norway, the main call of the demonstration is for the international community to exert stronger pressure on the military junta (SAC) to secure the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners currently detained unjustly.

Former Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik, who played a key role in strengthening Myanmar–Norway relations, will attend the demonstration in person to offer his support. Interim President Duwa Lashi La and Foreign Minister Daw Zin Mar Aung of the NUG will also address the event via video message.

Ko Htein Lin, the youngest son of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, will deliver a video message calling for his mother’s release.

Also participating will be NUG’s representative to Norway, U Maung Maung Myint, and Gunaketu Kjรธnstad, Secretary General of the Buddhist Federation of Norway. They will join in prayer and advocacy efforts at the event.

The commemoration is jointly organized by CRPH Support Group – Norway and the World Freedom Fund, an organization formerly chaired by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi herself.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 3. Resistance Forces in Sagaing Region Organize Public Mobilization and Photo Campaign Urging Action Against the Junta for Committing War Crimes

May 29

Resistance forces active within Myanmar’s Sagaing Region organized a public mobilization campaign and photo awareness initiative on May 28, calling for international action against the military junta for its continued commission of war crimes.

According to the Sagaing Regional Strike Forces, the campaign aimed to call on the International Labour Organization (ILO) to invoke Article 33 during the voting session scheduled for June 2 and 3—a move that could allow punitive measures against the junta, which has committed widespread war crimes against humanity. The action was framed as a push to "Vote for ILO Article 33 to Save Lives."

As part of the effort, the Youth Momentum Strike Column collaborated with local residents in Yinmarbin Township, conducting a protest march urging immediate international action against the violent junta that continues to perpetrate war crimes.

Similarly, the Shwe Bont Gyi People's Strike led a public protest, holding placards that read “Vote ILO Article 33 to Save LIVES” and chanting anti-junta slogans.

Another demonstration was organized by the "No Turning Back" Revolutionary People's Strike, in which locals also held placards bearing the same message while joining together in chants opposing military dictatorship.

In parallel, the Yinmarbin Township Revolutionary Underground Guerrilla Force (Pone Kan Daw) and the Youth Momentum Strike Column also launched a photo campaign to call for the invocation of ILO Article 33. Their demand emphasized international accountability for the junta’s atrocities, including the unlawful conscription of civilians as combatants and other serious violations committed by the Myanmar military.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 5. Since the Coup, Military Use and Attacks on Schools Have Increased, Says Norwegian Embassy

May 29

The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Yangon has issued a statement noting that, since the February 2021 military coup in Myanmar, there has been a sharp increase in both the militarization of educational institutions and targeted attacks on schools.

Today, May 29, marks the 10th anniversary of the introduction of the Safe Schools Declaration at the 2015 Oslo Conference. Originally proposed by Norway and Argentina, the Declaration now bears the signatures of 121 countries. It aims to safeguard education during armed conflict and prevent the military use of schools for warfare-related purposes.

According to the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA), countries that have endorsed the Safe Schools Declaration have seen more than a 50% reduction in the military use of schools and universities. However, the statement highlights that the situation in Myanmar remains dire.

Since the 2021 coup, Myanmar has experienced a dramatic escalation in the use of schools for military operations, along with increasing attacks on educational institutions. These incidents have led to numerous casualties and injuries among children, students, and teachers—regardless of their background.

The Embassy also expressed grave concern over a recent incident in which a school in Myanmar was subjected to an airstrike by the military, describing it as deeply alarming.

This report was filed by Radio NUG correspondents Tharki and Ko Khant.
