๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 1. Eight political prisoners in Daik-U Prison unlawfully placed in solitary confinement, says PPNM

August 25

The Political Prisoners Network – Myanmar (PPNM) announced today, August 25, that prison authorities at Daik-U Prison in Bago Region have placed eight political prisoners in solitary confinement without providing valid or sufficient reasons.

According to the statement, on July 23, prison officers carried out a search in Women’s Dormitory 1 (May Kha Ward) to check for illegal possessions. During the search, they claimed to have found a mobile phone battery near the bed of political prisoner Ma Nu Nway Nini Thwe. Prison officers then took her away to impose solitary confinement as punishment.

The statement noted that not only did the authorities fail to officially present the alleged confiscated item, but it was also not found in her possession. Instead, it was a targeted accusation used as a pretext for punishment. Ma Nu Nway Nini Thwe reportedly told prison officials that the punishment was unjust and unacceptable.

PPNM further revealed that prison staff, led by Officer Daw Zin Mar Kyi Aung, Officer Daw Thazin Myint, and prison guard Phyo Htet Htet Aung, dragged Ma Nu Nway Nini Thwe by her hair and beat her on the back before forcing her into solitary confinement.

Since this act was unlawful, fellow political prisoners in Daik-U Prison collectively appealed for Ma Nu Nway Nini Thwe not to be placed in solitary confinement and for her not to be subjected to mistreatment.

However, instead of addressing their concerns, prison authorities also took punitive action against those who voiced support. Under the pretext that they were "causing unrest in prison," they placed seven more political prisoners in solitary confinement: Daw Nu Nu Aung, Ma Nyunt Nyunt Win, Khin Yadana Win, Ma Mya Thandar Aung, Ma Aye Aye Win, Ma Cherry Thwe, and Ma Su Nandar Hlaing.

Prison authorities then claimed that the women’s ward was overcrowded and transferred the punished prisoners to the men’s compound. They were confined in an old men’s dormitory building, located between Male Compound 4 and the prison kitchen.

According to PPNM, around 27 political prisoners are now confined in this dormitory. The facility has no floor coverings, forcing inmates to live on bare cement. The rooms are in dilapidated condition, with leaking roofs and rainwater seeping inside, leaving the prisoners in an environment filled with foul odors.

Due to these harsh conditions, political prisoners are suffering from deteriorating health and sickness. Yet, prison doctors have failed to provide timely medical attention, PPNM reported.

Furthermore, because prisoners must leave the male ward compound to take baths in an outdoor area visible from outside the dormitory, they are subjected to humiliation and a lack of personal safety every time they bathe.
