He stated:

"I pay respect and honor to all the brave fighters who continue to stand firm on various fronts during this revolutionary period. It is evident to all that the junta has failed across all fronts in 2024, including military, political, international, economic, and efforts to win the support of the public. ๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 6. Thailand Denies Evidence of Financial Transactions Supporting Myanmar Military’s Weapon Purchases

December 31
Radio NUG

The Thai government has denied finding any evidence to support allegations that Thai banks were involved in facilitating financial transactions to aid Myanmar’s military in acquiring weapons, as per a UN expert’s report.

On December 30, the Bank of Thailand and the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) stated that they had not discovered any documents substantiating claims from a June report by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The report alleged that companies registered in Thailand were involved in transferring funds through Thai banks to the Myanmar military for the purchase of weapons and military equipment. It was estimated that around $60 million was transferred in the 2022 fiscal year and $120 million in 2023.

While some financial institutions were found to have conducted transactions with entities mentioned in the OHCHR report, there was no evidence linking these transactions to arms purchases, according to the joint statement by the Bank of Thailand and AMLO.

The Thai government, in response to the allegations, had set up a special task force in July to reassess its capacity to investigate past financial dealings. The joint statement highlighted the need to enhance anti-money laundering protocols and measures against financing terrorism to manage risks more effectively and prevent financial institutions from being exploited for human rights violations or illegal funding.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 7. Rohingya Detainees in Myanmar Jails Continue to Face Prolonged Detention

December 31
Radio NUG

Thousands of Rohingya detainees are being held across Myanmar's prisons, primarily charged under illegal border-crossing laws, according to a statement by the Myanmar Political Prisoners Network (PPNM).

Significant numbers of Rohingya are incarcerated in prisons such as Insein, Pathein, Myaungmya, Maubin, and Pyay. The report revealed that over 1,000 Rohingya detainees are held in Pathein Prison, 352 in Myaungmya Prison, and 38 in Maubin Prison, including 32 men and 6 women. Additionally, Pyay Prison holds 60 Rohingya, including new arrivals. Insein Prison alone houses approximately 500 Rohingya detainees.

Many detainees face poor healthcare services and delays in receiving medical treatment. At least four male Rohingya detainees have reportedly died due to inadequate medical care this year.

The investigation revealed that 150 Rohingya detainees in Myaungmya Prison and others in Maubin Prison, who were eligible for release, remain in detention as of the 2024 Independence Day amnesty. The continued detention is attributed to difficulties in repatriating detainees to Rakhine State due to ongoing conflict.

With no relatives to sponsor their release, many Rohingya detainees rely on political prisoners for food and other necessities. The PPNM reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of all detainees, including Rohingya prisoners, and to raising awareness of their plight.

The reports were prepared by Radio NUG correspondents Min Thihan, Min Sitt Thway, and Khashel.
