๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 2. Syria's Transition Offers Lessons for Myanmar’s Revolution, Says Minister Dr. Tu Khaung

Radio NUG

Union Minister Dr. Tu Khaung stated that Syria's transitional process could provide lessons for Myanmar's revolution, highlighting both strategies to adopt and pitfalls to avoid.

He reflected on the moment when revolutionary forces took control of Damascus after the fall of the authoritarian regime led by Bashar al-Assad. Imagining a similar moment in Myanmar, where citizens celebrate freedom in front of Yangon City Hall, gave him chills, he shared.

Dr. Tu Khaung also expressed concern about the challenges that might arise post-revolution, questioning whether unity and stability could prevail among various revolutionary factions.

Syria had been under authoritarian rule since 1970, starting with Hafez al-Assad and continuing with his son Bashar al-Assad, marking a 54-year family dictatorship.

In 2011, peaceful protests calling for the regime’s fall were brutally suppressed by Assad’s government, sparking an armed opposition movement and a protracted civil war.

By December 2024, revolutionary forces had captured major Syrian cities within days, dismantling Assad's regime entirely. Despite military and logistical support from Russia and Iran to prop up the Assad government, the authoritarian leader was ultimately forced to flee the country.
