๐๐ 3. Italian Support of Naval Weapons Violates EU Arms Embargo on Myanmar
January 10
Radio NUG
The provision of naval artillery by Italy to Myanmar's military regime violates the European Union’s arms embargo imposed on Myanmar since the 1990s, according to a January 10 statement by Just for Myanmar.
The King Thalu, Myanmar's largest frigate recently launched by the navy, is equipped with 76mm OTO Melara multi-purpose guns designed and built by the Italian defense company OTO Melara. This support contravenes the EU’s arms embargo on Myanmar, in place for decades.
The statement also stressed that the Myanmar navy is complicit in crimes against humanity, including the genocide against the Rohingya people. Therefore, it urged the cessation of arms transfers to the junta, highlighting the moral imperative to cut the flow of weapons to war criminals.
EU member states were called upon to impose stronger sanctions against the military junta to prevent further atrocities.
