๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 6. UK Government Pledges Continued Support for Myanmar People in 2025

January 1, 2025
The UK Government has pledged to continue its solidarity and cooperation with the people of Myanmar in the new year, as announced by Ken O’Flaherty, Head of the British Embassy in Yangon, in his New Year’s message:

"Since the military coup on February 1, 2021, at least 6,000 civilians have lost their lives. This is a truly horrifying situation. During August and October, the military’s aerial attacks on civilians reached unprecedented levels since the coup began. As we made clear at the United Nations, the UK government unequivocally condemns these airstrikes.

While we cannot predict what will happen in 2025, the UK Government stands firm with all of you in your pursuit of a peaceful and democratic future that you so rightfully deserve."

The UK has provided £5 million in aid to communities affected by severe flooding caused by Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar, alongside an additional £36 million in support for local initiatives in education, healthcare, and other essential areas.

Last year, the UK imposed two rounds of sanctions targeting individuals involved in severe human rights abuses and enacted measures to disrupt the Myanmar military’s access to aviation fuel and related supplies.
