๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 4. Military Junta Arming Prisoners from Bhamo and Mohnyin Prisons to Guard Facilities

March 14

The Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM) reported on March 14 that the military junta has been forcibly arming prisoners from Bhamo and Mohnyin Prisons in Kachin State and deploying them as prison guards.

PPNM stated that prisoners were being coerced into taking up arms to resist attacks from revolutionary forces. The network conducted investigations and confirmed that the junta has been forcing prisoners to defend the prisons alongside military personnel during clashes with revolutionary groups.

In conflict zones, junta troops have reportedly been arming convicted criminals and deploying them as security guards at prisons. Additionally, when revolutionary forces attack, these prisoners are compelled to fight alongside junta troops.

It was further revealed that during Operation 1111, the junta armed detained soldiers and police officers convicted of military and police violations, deploying them in battle.

Similarly, during the revolutionary attack on Loikaw Prison, detained military personnel and police officers were reportedly granted temporary reinstatement as officers and ordered to fight in battle.

PPNM strongly condemned these actions, describing them as illegal forced military conscription of prisoners and a blatant manipulation of convicted soldiers and police officers to escape their sentences in exchange for combat service.
