Radio NUG

A soldier from Battalion 151 (Electrical) in Hpa-An, Hein Htet Aung, defected to the people’s side on January 6 after reaching out to the Southern Military Region of the People’s Defense Force (PDF), according to reports.

Hein Htet Aung was originally transferred from Mandalay to Yangon for work but was arrested and interrogated by the military council. He was accused of being affiliated with the PDF because his national registration card bore an identification number beginning with "8/". The military then gave him an ultimatum—either enlist in the army or work as a fisherman at sea. Fearing that working at sea would leave him with no escape route, he chose to join the military.

During his military training, he endured severe beatings and mistreatment. He was physically assaulted whenever he failed to obey commands, and when accused of using too much water, he was struck near his ear, causing internal bleeding that resulted in complete hearing loss in one ear.

He completed military training on April 26, 2024, and was assigned to Battalion 151 (Electrical) in Hpa-An on May 5, 2024. Afterward, he made multiple attempts to escape from military control.

Now, as a member of the People's Defense Forces, Hein Htet Aung has pledged to fight back against the military council, which oppresses and brutalizes civilians.
