On April 10, Union Minister U Aung Myo Min of the Ministry of Human Rights under the National Unity Government (NUG) participated in a parliamentary hearing on Myanmar held at the National Assembly of South Korea. He was accompanied by U Yan Naing Htun, the NUG’s representative to South Korea, and attended the session at the invitation of South Korean lawmakers.

The event was led by Rep. Lee Yun-seon, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and attended by fellow Democratic Party lawmakers Cho Jeong-sik, Seo Young-seok, Bat Hun-bae, Lee Kang-il, Cha Ji-ho, as well as other officials.

At the hearing, Union Minister U Aung Myo Min delivered a presentation under the theme "Myanmar Under Military-Created Human Rights Abuses Amid Natural Disaster", in which he outlined the following:

The severe human rights violations committed by the violent military junta over the past four years since the coup;

The governance and administrative capacities of the NUG and ethnic resistance organizations;

The destruction and losses caused by the recent major earthquake in Sagaing Region;

The NUG’s emergency humanitarian response and rescue efforts;

Aerial bombings carried out by the junta during the earthquake crisis;

The military regime’s exploitative response to the disaster;

And the urgent need for the international community to pay attention to how the junta is misappropriating humanitarian aid.

Following the presentation, U Aung Myo Min urged the South Korean government and parliament to take the following actions:

Prevent direct or indirect investments that benefit or collaborate with the military junta;

Impose restrictions on the transfer of technology, including military equipment and aviation fuel, to the junta;

Refrain from engaging diplomatically with the junta;

Withhold recognition of the junta’s sham elections;

Ensure that humanitarian assistance is delivered not through the junta, but through the NUG and local communities;

Provide protection to Myanmar nationals residing in South Korea;

And actively participate in international efforts to prosecute the junta for its crimes under international law.

In response, Representative Lee Yun-seon reiterated that South Korea will not deliver humanitarian aid directly to the military junta, but rather will ensure it reaches the people of Myanmar through international organizations. He emphasized that the South Korean government has remained steadfast in its foreign policy since the onset of the coup attempt in Myanmar.

He also expressed his deep sorrow over the devastating losses caused by the earthquake at a time when the people of Myanmar are already suffering from the ongoing pro-democracy revolution. He conveyed his solidarity with the people of Myanmar and pledged that South Korea would stand with them in their struggle for the restoration of democracy. Furthermore, he reaffirmed South Korea’s commitment to actively protect Myanmar nationals living in the country.

Also in attendance at the hearing were key South Korean civil society groups and democratic organizations, including the 5.18 Foundation in Seoul, student unions, Myanmar revolutionary organizations, and media outlets. The session featured open and reciprocal discussions, during which Minister U Aung Myo Min responded to various questions.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 3. Military leaders, armed and narrow-minded, misappropriated emergency disaster relief funds by granting loans to affiliated businesspeople

Military leaders, who wield guns yet possess only the intellect of a chicken, have been accused of recklessly lending out emergency disaster relief funds — which were meant to be reserved for natural disasters — to business associates close to them, according to PDF Insight, a publication analyzing military affairs.

“Those gun-toting military leaders with the intelligence of a chicken,” the report states, “have diverted emergency disaster relief funds — which were specifically reserved for natural calamities — by lending them out to affiliated business owners. These funds were misused irresponsibly, and when a real disaster finally struck, they were left completely unprepared, with no emergency fund available for use. If the earthquake had only affected Mandalay and the Sagaing area, Min Aung Hlaing wouldn’t have given it this much attention. But now that significant damage has occurred in Naypyitaw — the junta’s intended royal capital — and at the military’s central command, they’ve been stunned into embarrassment and are now shamelessly requesting international assistance,” the report said.

Under the People’s Government, emergency rescue units had been formed and drills were conducted. Around 500 billion kyats had been set aside specifically as a disaster relief fund. Furthermore, a helicopter had been preemptively purchased for emergency response purposes, the report noted.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation under the National Unity Government (NUG), a 43-year-old female elephant named Tin Hla Hla, from a logging camp in a resistance-controlled area, stepped on a buried landmine while transporting timber needed to repair bridges along the Sitthone Lan and Myoshoung Lan routes in Sagaing Region.

The landmine blast caused serious injuries to her front right leg. Veterinarians are currently providing medical treatment, and the ministry has issued a public call for support to ensure that the necessary medicines and treatments can be delivered effectively.
