🚩🚩 4. Sixteen-Year-Old Child Soldier Defects to People’s Side from Military Battalion No. 2 in Dawei District
August 28
According to an announcement released on the evening of August 27 by Dawei District Battalion No. 2, a 16-year-old newly recruited conscript soldier has defected to the people’s side.
The defector is identified as Maung Zinko Ko Ko, a child soldier who had been forcibly recruited into the army. He was previously part of a military column that burned down Sawphya Village and Moeshwe Gone Village in Tharyar Chaung Township, Tanintharyi Region.
He revealed that he was abducted during school holidays while working in paddy fields. On his way home, he was stopped by two soldiers, forcibly taken, and enrolled in the first phase of basic military training.
According to his testimony, before entering the villages, the column commander ordered the soldiers to clear villages by shelling with heavy and light weapons, and later instructed younger recruits under his command to burn down entire villages.
He further explained that when the column moved from one village to another, they stayed overnight in a two-story monastery, which the military later ordered to be bombed using drones. He also admitted that when villagers fled, the soldiers looted abandoned houses and shops, stealing valuables and expensive goods.
Maung Zinko Ko Ko stated that during his training and after graduation, he had thought about escaping. However, officers and instructors threatened recruits with propaganda, saying that anyone who defected to the PDFs would be beheaded or slaughtered. He confessed that most recruits—including himself—believed these threats at first.
In reality, he said, the PDFs welcomed him kindly and protected him, ensuring his safety. He urged other conscripts, soldiers, and officers who want to defect to join the people’s side without delay, emphasizing that they will be protected.
Dawei District Battalion No. 2 also reassured that young people who have been forcibly conscripted into the terrorist junta’s army—where they suffer abuse and oppression—can defect at any time and place, and their lives and safety will be guaranteed.
