๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ 1. NUG Acting President Urges All Revolutionary Forces to Strive Relentlessly for a Decisive Victory in 2025

April 17

The National Unity Government’s Acting President has called on all revolutionary forces to intensify their efforts in 2025 to ensure that it becomes the year which brings a decisive turning point in the revolution and carries the light of ultimate victory to the people.

Acting President Duwa Lashi La made this appeal today, April 17, during his New Year address to the people, coinciding with Myanmar's traditional New Year Day.

He emphasized that since the military junta no longer controls even one-fourth of the country, 2025 must be the year in which the revolution is brought to a conclusive victory. He noted that the junta is now facing the most significant setbacks in its history.

The Spring Revolution has now surpassed four years, and with the prolonged duration of the revolutionary struggle, the people have endured immense suffering while the country has also paid a heavy price, he stated.

“This is a revolution to uproot a military regime that has drained the nation’s resources and blood while waging war against its own people. It is also a revolution to dismantle military dictatorship and its ideology in all forms. Therefore, it is only natural that the process is arduous and fraught with difficulty,” he explained.

For this reason, the Acting President stressed that it is imperative to strive with all possible strength to bring this revolution to a swift and successful conclusion and to relieve the people of the burden they have long carried.

Military records indicate that as of now, the revolutionary forces, including the NUG, have managed to seize control of nearly 100 towns and cities across Myanmar.

๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ 2. SAC Airstrike Targets Kasote Village in Moguak Township on Myanmar New Year’s Day

April 17

On the morning of April 17, Myanmar New Year’s Day, the junta’s forces conducted an airstrike on Kasote Village in the eastern part of Moguak Township, located in Military Region 2 under Ta’ang territory. The strike occurred around 10 a.m., with a jet fighter dropping one bomb, according to a statement by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA).

This special announcement, released today by TNLA, reports the details of the airstrike and states that further updates on the extent of damage will be provided. As of 11 a.m. today, TNLA has confirmed that additional information is forthcoming.

According to the People’s Defense Force (PDF) in Pyin Oo Lwin District, the SAC’s jet fighter, identified as a Russian-made SU-30, also bombed Thitseikkon Village in western Moguak with a 300-pound bomb, injuring two civilians. While the earlier strike on Kasote did not result in any injuries, the subsequent bombing caused civilian casualties.

This comes despite the military council’s previous announcement that it would observe a 20-day ceasefire from April 2 to 22. However, the PSLF/TNLA reports that the junta continues to reinforce military presence, launch ground offensives, and carry out airstrikes, even in areas without active armed clashes within PSLF/TNLA-administered territories.

๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ 3. Only a Small Number of Political Prisoners Included in SAC's Pardon, Says PPNM

April 17

The Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM) has stated that only a minimal number of political prisoners were included in the SAC’s recent prisoner pardon announced on Myanmar New Year’s Day.

The junta, which seized power from the civilian government, announced the release of 4,893 inmates on April 17. However, PPNM noted that in some prisons, not a single political prisoner—many of whom were arbitrarily detained—was among those released.

Moreover, the SAC has applied conditional clemency clauses, stating that if a pardoned individual is convicted again, all previously commuted sentences will be reinstated.

While the public may perceive that the junta granted a one-sixth sentence reduction, PPNM explained that the wording of the order refers to a "remaining one-sixth" reduction. For instance, if six days remain in a sentence, only one day will be reduced—contrary to public assumptions.

PPNM criticized the junta for crafting this misleading narrative for political gain, ahead of ASEAN meetings scheduled for April 18 and other international engagements. The organization has urged ASEAN countries not to invite the junta to any such forums.

Furthermore, PPNM called for the unconditional and immediate release of all political prisoners, including former President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who remain unlawfully detained.

๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ 6. New Junta Soldier Defects with Weapons, Citing Forced Conscription

April 17

A newly recruited soldier from the junta forces stationed at a military camp along the Pae Nwel Kone–Nat Thankwin road in Kyauk Tan Khar Township, Bago Region, defected to the People’s Defense Force (PDF), Battalion P2-3702 of Bago District No. 2, on April 15, according to a statement released today, April 17, by the battalion.

The defector brought with him an MA-1 rifle, four magazines, and ninety-six rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition. He has since been safely relocated to a secure area and connected with the relevant civilian support groups to facilitate his transition and ensure his well-being, the statement noted.

It was also reported that a similar defection from the same junta camp occurred earlier this month on April 9, when another newly conscripted soldier surrendered along with weapons and ammunition.

The battalion urged other forcibly recruited junta soldiers to reach out to revolutionary units and defect at the earliest opportunity.

Bago District No. 2 PDF Battalion P2-3702 reaffirmed its commitment to warmly welcome all who defect from the oppressive junta forces.

๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ 7. Justice For Myanmar Urges Czech Government to Investigate Compelson for Supplying Surveillance Tech to Junta Police

April 17

Justice For Myanmar (JFM) has called on the Czech government to promptly launch an investigation into Compelson s.r.o., a Prague-based digital forensics company, for allegedly selling surveillance technology to the Myanmar Police Force under the military junta, in violation of EU laws.

According to evidence obtained by Justice For Myanmar, Compelson sold multiple licenses of its MOBILedit Forensic Pro software to the junta-controlled police.

JFM spokesperson Ma Ratana Maung stated,

“Compelson knowingly sold powerful surveillance technology to the Myanmar Police Force, which is responsible for committing crimes against humanity. Since the military’s attempted coup, thousands of civilians have been killed, and pro-democracy activists and journalists have been systematically targeted, arrested, and tortured. The junta has used digital forensics and surveillance tools in these oppressive acts—tools that may have been enabled by Compelson's software.”

An internal email from July 2021, sent by a Compelson international business development officer, reportedly encouraged the enhancement of the software to allow direct access and data extraction from Apple Watches, as well as hacking into Linux, Android, and mobile phone systems, specifically for the Myanmar junta police.

Since the military’s coup attempt, more than 29,000 people, including activists, journalists, and human rights defenders, have been unlawfully arrested. Many detainees have suffered torture or death while in military custody.
