On April 22, Acting President Duwa Lashi La sent a message of condolence on behalf of the National Unity Government (NUG) and the people of Myanmar, mourning the passing of Pope Francis, who passed away at 7:35 a.m. on April 21 at the Casa Santa Marta residence in Vatican City.

In his message, the Acting President recalled that just last week, Pope Francis had made a heartfelt donation in support of communities in Myanmar affected by the recent earthquake. He also noted the Pope’s enduring solidarity with the people of Myanmar, especially since his visit to the country in 2017, during which he repeatedly advocated for full rights for the Rohingya community, and spoke out in favor of democracy and freedom.

The Pope often used his Sunday Angelus address to bring global attention to Myanmar's pro-democracy student protests, calling for remembrance and recognition. His compassion extended especially to children, the elderly, the imprisoned, the ill, refugees, and to the general population suffering from the impacts of war and conflict.

The message further noted that the Pope had called for an inclusive dialogue toward peace in Myanmar and that following the attempted military coup in 2021, he convened a special gathering in Rome for Myanmar Catholics. At that event, he urged unity, truth, and hope in the face of military oppression and violence. He also prayed for hearts and minds to be transformed towards peace by divine grace.

In his tribute, Acting President Duwa Lashi La emphasized that the National Unity Government honors the memory of Pope Francis and reaffirms its commitment to building a democratic nation—one that is free, equal, and inclusive, where all citizens enjoy full rights and live together in lasting peace.

The "In Steady Steps… Toward the Goal" fundraising campaign, which had been paused due to the recent earthquake, has now resumed, according to the People’s Democratic Force (PDF).

“We originally launched the ‘In Steady Steps… Toward the Goal’ campaign in February, but we had to pause for nearly a month due to the earthquake. Starting today, the campaign will resume and continue until June 5. This is the first campaign the People’s Democratic Force has launched in its four-year history,” the statement reads.

The campaign period runs from April 22 to June 5, with a fundraising target of 60 million MMK. However, only 18% of the target has been raised so far. As there is no fixed donation amount, supporters are welcome to contribute any amount they can afford.
