๐๐ 1. MNDAA Expresses Regret Over Withdrawal from Lashio and Reports Treatment of Over 95,000 Patients in Eight Months
April 26
Radio NUG
According to MNDAA’s press release, under the guidance of the Department of Health of the Special Region (1), healthcare workers at Lashio General Hospital were able to provide medical treatment to a total of 95,258 patients — including both outpatients and inpatients — over an eight-month period.
Following the successful capture of Lashio, the health sector was able to resume operations one week later, starting on August 10, 2024. Despite facing severe challenges such as aerial bombardments by the SAC and numerous reconstruction obstacles, healthcare personnel and medical professionals worked in an organized manner to restore services and successfully implemented a wide range of healthcare programs.
Efforts included dengue fever prevention campaigns, vaccination and immunization programs for all children under five, free thyroid surgery, free cataract surgery, free prosthetic limb fittings, and many other health services, all aimed at providing the best possible care to the public.
In response to criticism on social media regarding the increased cost of medical treatments, a hospital official explained,
"Previously, a pack of paracetamol only cost about 1,000 kyats. Now, the price has nearly doubled. People must understand that the hospital’s operating costs are no longer the same. After the battle for Lashio, we had to start everything from zero, rebuilding amidst destruction and scarcity. We had to create ways to secure medical supplies through blocked routes to serve the public as best as we could. Despite facing significant financial losses amounting to tens of millions of kyats from the hospital’s budget, we prioritized restoring the healthcare sector for the people.”
Additionally, a health department official expressed deep sorrow over being forced to withdraw from Lashio due to immense political pressure.
Regarding media reports criticizing the removal of hospital equipment, a hospital official clarified,
"There was about a one-week gap between the day we closed the hospital and the day the SAC forces took over. To give an example, we had to move dialysis machines because many patients required dialysis. We were treating about 50 dialysis patients per week, and missing a session could have been fatal for some. Therefore, we relocated the dialysis machines to the nearest hospital in Theinni (Hseni). Only about 20% of the most urgently needed medical equipment and supplies were taken. We did our best for the people, and although we are satisfied with that, we are saddened by the political circumstances that made such actions unavoidable.”
