๐ฉ๐ฉ 7. Junta Soldier from LIB-439 Defects to KNLA Battalion 8 with Weapon and Ammunition
May 12
Radio NUG
According to the Central Committee of the Karen National Union (KNU), a soldier from the military junta’s Light Infantry Battalion 439 defected to Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) Battalion 8 in Mu Township, Dooplaya District of Kawthoolei, on May 5, 2025.
The defector, identified as Ko Thet Aung (alias Ko Thet), brought with him:
One MA-11 assault rifle
Three magazines
100 rounds of ammunition
He escaped from the junta’s Pyidaungsu military camp and surrendered to the KNLA.
Ko Thet Aung was previously a YBS (Yangon Bus Service) driver and had been forcibly conscripted into military service without his consent. In recognition of his defection, KNLA Battalion 8 and local township authorities awarded him a cash reward of 1 million kyats.
The KNU emphasized that such cases highlight the junta's ongoing unlawful conscription practices, including forced recruitment of civilians. The KNU further encouraged other junta soldiers who are being coerced into service to defect and surrender to the nearest ethnic resistance forces or People’s Defense Forces (PDFs).
These reports were compiled and submitted by Radio NUG correspondents Tharki and Khur Shel.
