Myanmar Military News Updates – May 17, 2025 Morning

๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ 1. Military Council's Mauk Kwee Lu Base in Bawlakhe District Recaptured

According to an official statement released by the Karen National Union (KNU) Central Command, the military base at Mauk Kwee Lu—located in Thayaraye (Paing Kyone) Township, Bawlakhe District, and previously occupied by invading forces of the military junta’s Light Infantry Battalion 24—was successfully recaptured on May 16, 2025, at approximately 5:30 AM.

The operation was carried out jointly by Brigade 7 of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the Karen National Defence Organisation (KNDO) under the KNU.

Initial attacks on the junta base reportedly began on the morning of May 15, and the allied resistance forces managed to seize control of the camp within one day.

๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ 2. Junta Defector "Khine Gyi" Killed by SAC Shelling During Interrogation

On May 16 at approximately 12:30 PM, members of Phoenix Defence Force (DF), Unit 2 under Battalion P23801 in Thayawady District, conducted a visit to Kansu Village to confront two junta defectors—Khine Gyi and Aung Kyaw San—who were reportedly engaged in extortion and abuses against civilians even after leaving the military. The resistance forces stated they warned both individuals not to resume their prior oppressive conduct.

During the conversation, Aung Kyaw San asked to step away for water but attempted to flee. As the resistance fighters pursued him, Khine Gyi also tried to escape. Although Aung Kyaw San managed to get away, Khine Gyi was recaptured at approximately 1:21 PM.

While interrogating Khine Gyi on a hillside between Kansu Village and Sisone Kone, the SAC (State Administration Council) forces fired heavy artillery shells from the opposite side of Kansu Village, targeting the resistance fighters. A shell struck directly at the interrogation site, killing Khine Gyi instantly.

The resistance fighters managed to evade further harm, sustaining only minor injuries from the blast, according to the report.

๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ 3. Civilian Killed, Three Injured in SAC Drone and Artillery Attack near Inn Wine Village, Launglon Township

On May 16, 2025, at approximately 12:40 PM, military junta forces conducted an unprovoked attack using drones and heavy artillery near Inn Wine Village, Launglon Township, in Tanintharyi Region, despite the absence of any active clashes in the area, according to local sources.

The attack resulted in the death of one civilian and injuries to three others, as well as the destruction of a civilian-owned vehicle, which was set ablaze.

It was reported that the artillery and drone strikes were launched from a junta base located on the opposite bank of the river in Thayetchaung, near a border zone housing the Department of Border Affairs and Ethnic Development (NaTaLa).

๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ 4. Six Civilians Including a Monastic Novice Killed in Junta Shelling on Ngalone Tin Village, Chaung-U Township

According to local sources, on the night of May 15, 2025, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Myanmar military junta forces launched an artillery attack on Ngalone Tin Village in Chaung-U Township, Sagaing Region, despite the absence of any armed clashes in the area.

The junta's indiscriminate shelling directly struck civilian areas in the village. As a result, six civilians, including a novice monk, were killed instantly.

๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ 5. One New Military Recruit from LIB-18 in Hheho Defects to Resistance Forces

On May 15, a newly recruited soldier from the junta's Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 18, based in Hheho, Kalaw Township, Southern Shan State, defected and joined the resistance, according to an announcement by the People's Defence Force – Chauk (Thakhin Phoe Hla Gyi Unit).

It is reported that the defector was being transferred to the Mawlamyine frontline when he managed to escape, bringing with him three hand grenades and seeking protection from the resistance.

The recruit had been previously arrested during a forced conscription campaign on February 16 in Chauk for the junta's 10th recruitment batch, and was later transferred to the No. 3 Military Training School in Kyaukhtalone.

๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ 6. Ten Junta Soldiers Who Surrendered to MNDAA Flee with Weapons; Three Recaptured

According to Shwe Phee Myay News Agency, ten soldiers from the Myanmar military who had previously surrendered to the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) in Kokang under formal pledges fled with weapons, resulting in a pursuit and the recapture of three individuals.

These ten junta soldiers had entered the Kokang forces based in Lashio under a formal surrender agreement. However, they reportedly fled on May 10, taking weapons with them and escaping towards the Kunlong Mountain region.

MNDAA troops launched a pursuit operation and managed to apprehend three of the escapees, according to local sources cited by Shwe Phee Myay.

Additionally, during the time of their defection from Lashio, the MNDAA is said to have relocated junta military prisoners and their family members from Lashio Prison to Laukkai and had also released some of them.

๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ 7. Nearly 3,000 Civilians Displaced Due to Junta’s Violent Campaign in Kyainseikgyi Township

The Karen National Union (KNU) has reported that a total of 2,721 civilians have fled their homes due to ongoing acts of violence perpetrated by the military junta in Kyainseikgyi Township, within the Kawthoolei administrative area, Doothathoo (Thaton) District, under the control of the KNU.

The junta forces have been deliberately targeting civilian populations in the area with artillery shelling and airstrikes, forcing residents from the villages of Winkane, Bawkathe, Kyauk Yae Twin, Kalawmyoung, Shan Su, and Anyar Su, all within the Winkane Village Tract, to flee in search of safety.

According to the report, these villages comprise 654 households, with a displaced population of 2,721 people, including 1,283 men and 1,438 women, all of whom are now seeking refuge to escape danger.

On May 14, between 8:20 AM and 11:35 AM, junta forces from Artillery Battalion 310 launched seven 120 mm shells, while a junta unit stationed in Sin Ywar Village, Waw Township, Bago Region, fired an additional four 122 mm shells targeting villages in Kyainseikgyi Township.

Furthermore, at 11:52 AM, a jet fighter dropped two bombs over Shwegyin Township, within the area controlled by Military Operations Command (MOC) 3. Another bomb was dropped at 12:03 PM in Kyauk Phyar Village Tract in Kyainseikgyi Township.

On May 13, at 9:12 PM, despite the absence of any active fighting, junta forces from Artillery Battalion 310 also launched three 122 mm artillery rounds.

๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ 8. Frontline Troops Suffer from Skin Diseases and Infections Due to Weather Changes – Urgent Call for Medical Support

Frontline resistance fighters from Battalion 6 of Minbuu District have issued a public appeal, reporting that many of their members are suffering from skin diseases and infections due to seasonal weather changes.

To help combat these medical issues, the public is kindly urged to contribute either medicines or monetary donations, according to the statement.

Approximately 70% of frontline troops are reportedly experiencing serious dermatological conditions, attributed to the combination of poor sanitary conditions and unclean water during the transitional season. The situation has deteriorated to the point where severe sores have developed, making it difficult for some to walk properly due to pain and inflammation in their legs and feet.
