๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ 5. Myanmar Military Systematically Disseminated Over 10,000 Hate Posts Targeting Rohingya

June 18

The Myanmar military systematically disseminated more than 10,000 hate speech posts targeting the Rohingya, according to findings from a report released by the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM).

The report examined content posted between July and December 2017 across 43 Facebook pages. All of these pages were taken down by Facebook in 2018. Although the pages appeared independent and often featured popular news or content from prominent figures, the IIMM concluded they were covertly connected to a coordinated network affiliated with the Myanmar military.

The IIMM found that more than 10,000 hate speech posts targeting the Rohingya were identified across these pages.

The report concluded that while widespread violence against the Rohingya was occurring on the ground, the Myanmar military was simultaneously orchestrating a systematic online campaign to spread hate speech in real time.

According to the IIMM’s analysis, the Myanmar military engaged in this hate speech campaign both in the lead-up to and during the 2017 “clearance operations,” a period marked by atrocities committed against the Rohingya.
