📌📌 4. ADB Pledges USD 100 Million in Earthquake Relief Support for the People of Myanmar
June 19
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced that it will provide humanitarian support worth USD 100 million for the people of Myanmar affected by the recent earthquake.
According to ADB’s June 17 statement, the aid—provided through the Asian Development Fund (ADF)—is intended to deliver humanitarian relief and contribute to long-term community resilience and social recovery for earthquake survivors.
ADB had previously delivered USD 3 million in emergency aid immediately after the earthquake. This new support marks a further significant commitment to assist those in need.
The assistance will be distributed through key UN agencies, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the World Food Programme (WFP).
According to the statement, this is the largest single humanitarian support package ADB has ever provided to the people of Myanmar. It will supply essential food, clean water, shelter, and healthcare services to those most affected.
In addition, the support will include vocational training, resilience-building activities, and livelihood programs to aid in long-term recovery and sustainable development.
Before the 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Sagaing Region on May 28, approximately 4.3 million people in Myanmar were already in need of emergency humanitarian assistance. However, the United Nations has since reported that this number has risen to over 6.3 million people in urgent need of aid and protection following the disaster.
