ππ 3. MDSI reports that recruitment of People’s Military Conscripts is higher than projected, while only a small number have defected or surrendered
September 21
The Myanmar Defense and Security Institute (MDSI) reported that under the People’s Military Service Law, the terrorist junta is recruiting more conscripts than previously projected, while the number of those defecting or surrendering remains very small.
For example, in recent weeks in Mandalay Region, the personal registration number of conscript trainee Khine Maung Win from Batch 12 was 158,280, while in early July, Batch 12 conscripts had registration numbers only in the 60,000 range.
Currently, the junta has already trained up to Batch 14 and opened courses up to Batch 17.
MDSI added that some conscripts are being reassigned as permanent soldiers and sent to basic military training.
Although the junta is forcibly conscripting around 5,000 young people per month, training them and deploying them to the frontlines, the number of defectors or those contacting revolutionary forces remains only a small percentage.
MDSI assessed that fear of junta propaganda and threats, lack of knowledge on how to connect with revolutionary forces, and difficulty in making contact or accessing information are major obstacles preventing conscripts from defecting.
Because the junta is using every possible method to meet and exceed monthly conscription quotas, illegal recruitment drives, arbitrary arrests, and human trafficking of youth are widespread across the country, MDSI warned.
This report was filed by Radio NUG correspondent Ko Khant.
