📌📌 1. The Terrorist Military Junta Intensifies Atrocities and Pressures the Public Ahead of Its Sham Election, Says the NUG

October 9

The Ministry of Human Rights of the National Unity Government (NUG) announced that the terrorist military junta has been coercing the public to support its so-called election while simultaneously committing increasingly brutal war crimes.

The statement was issued following a deadly airstrike by the junta on Thadingyut Full Moon Day in Chaung-U Township, where civilians, including children, were killed. The victims were residents who had gathered to express their rejection of the junta’s fake election.

According to the report, the terrorist military’s paramotor units launched two 120 mm bombs from the Northwest Regional Command base in Monywa. Later that night, at around 11:00 p.m., as medics were treating the wounded, the junta carried out another attack—two paramotors again dropping 120 mm bombs—directly targeting a local school building, inflicting further devastation.

The bombing killed 19 people on the spot, including three children under 18 and four members of a local strike committee. Among the dead were 14 men and two women. One of the victims was a two-year-old child whose body was dismembered by the blast.

The attack also injured 40 civilians—20 children under 18, 13 men, and 7 women. The victims were all civilians from villages in the Chaung-U and Monywa areas. By 7:30 p.m. on October 8, the death toll had reportedly risen to 22, with 55 people wounded, according to the NUG’s Ministry of Human Rights.

Additionally, two school buildings, one vehicle, two sidecars, four motorbikes, and a brick water tank were destroyed.

The NUG warned that the junta is simultaneously intensifying violence and coercing the population to secure participation in its illegitimate election. It urged the international community not to turn a blind eye to these escalating war crimes and to take firm measures against the junta’s election campaign and ongoing atrocities.

The NUG also cautioned that if international and domestic entities supporting or ignoring the junta’s election continue their complicity, the regime will only escalate its violent campaigns further.

The Ministry of Human Rights reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing justice for these war crimes, noting that the junta deliberately commits acts of terror against civilians even on culturally and religiously significant days in an attempt to reinforce its grip on power.

📌📌 2. Women and Child Protection (WCP) Training Conducted Amid Ongoing Airstrike Threats by the Terrorist Junta

October 9

Despite ongoing aerial threats from the terrorist military junta, a Women and Child Protection (WCP) training course was successfully conducted in Yesagyo Township, Magway Region, during the current period of armed conflict, according to the Ministry of Human Rights of the NUG.

The ministry stated that the course was launched in September as part of efforts to enhance protection for women and children in conflict zones. Trainers from the Ministry of Human Rights conducted previous capacity-building programs for local human rights officers in 2024 and 2025, enabling such follow-up trainings to take place.

The Yesagyo training was led by a female human rights officer. It covered essential topics, including:

  • Fundamental principles of child rights;
  • Grave violations against children such as killing, maiming, sexual exploitation, and forced recruitment;
  • Gender-based violence and conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV);
  • The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW); and
  • The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

Participants discussed practical protection measures for children affected by violence, how communities and relevant authorities can intervene, and available complaint mechanisms. The training also covered legal frameworks protecting women, methods of providing support to victims of gender-based violence, and access to reporting systems.

Throughout the training, participants had to remain alert under the constant threat of junta airstrikes, and despite heavy rainfall, both trainers and trainees continued with determination—allowing the course to be completed successfully.

The NUG’s Ministry of Human Rights currently has 102 human rights officers nationwide, including approximately 25 female officers serving as Women’s Human Rights Focal Points.
