๐ฉ๐ฉ 1. Fierce Battles in the Capture of Bhamo, High-Ranking Military Officials Airlifted Due to Injuries
January 24
The ongoing offensive to capture Bhamo, the second-largest city in Kachin State, remains intense, with reports indicating that high-ranking military officials injured in the clashes were evacuated by helicopter, according to military and local sources.
Since the morning of January 24, fierce fighting has been reported between the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), its allied forces, and the military junta, a regional military source confirmed. The KIA and its allies have been conducting their Bhamo operation since early December 2024, gradually escalating their offensive.
Although fighting intensified in early January, clashes subsided for a few days. However, in the third week of January, the KIA and its allies launched another wave of assaults, according to the military sources.
Amid escalating clashes, the military is heavily relying on artillery, drones, and airstrikes for defense, while the KIA counters with artillery and drones, causing significant casualties on the junta’s side.
On January 21, junta forces used two helicopters to evacuate 15 critical patients and 10 deceased individuals from the Bhamo-based No. 21 Military Operations Command Headquarters (MOC-21), local sources confirmed. CDM Major Zinn Yaw speculated that one of the casualties could be a high-ranking officer from Bhamo Command. Reports suggest Colonel Tin Min Latt, the commander of MOC-21, was among the injured.
The KIA has reportedly cleared most junta-controlled positions in Bhamo city, leaving only MOC-21 and Battalion 47 to be captured. Thus, the KIA and its allied forces are pressing forward with their operations.
