๐๐ 5. Former Political Prisoners Condemn SAC’s Misleading Amnesty Announcements
A group of 26 former political prisoners issued a statement strongly condemning the military council (SAC) for its misleading claims regarding the release of political prisoners on Myanmar’s Independence Day.
The statement criticized the SAC for using political prisoners as a bargaining tool to deceive both the public and the international community. It reiterated that former political prisoners would continue to closely monitor and actively oppose the military council’s actions.
On January 4, 2025, the SAC claimed to have released 5,864 prisoners in honor of Independence Day, including approximately 600 political prisoners under Article 505. However, according to PPNM's monitoring of over 40 prisons across Myanmar, only 344 political prisoners were released, comprising 208 men and 131 women, falling significantly short of the SAC's publicized numbers.
Since the coup in February 2021, the SAC has announced 16 amnesties, releasing 101,729 detainees. However, political prisoners accounted for only 8.6% (8,762 individuals) of the total releases. Despite these figures, over 21,499 political prisoners remain in detention, with at least 9,985 facing sentences ranging from one year to the death penalty.
