๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 2. Future of Myanmar’s Politics to Be Determined by Its People, Says Malaysian Foreign Minister

February 24

The future of Myanmar’s politics depends on its people, said the Malaysian Foreign Minister, who currently holds the rotating ASEAN chairmanship.

Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to addressing Myanmar’s ongoing crisis, including ensuring the security and peace of the Myanmar people and tackling human trafficking.

“We want to see Myanmar return to stability. Only then can discussions take place about holding elections. The future of Myanmar’s politics rests in the hands of its people. However, ASEAN’s primary objective is to resolve the crisis,” he stated.

Although ASEAN upholds its principle of non-interference, the crisis in Myanmar has already spilled over into neighboring countries, he added.

“The crisis has become a major international concern, including issues like human trafficking, online scams, cybercrime, and drug-related activities. These crimes pose significant challenges to neighboring countries, including Malaysia,” he said.

After assuming the 2025 ASEAN chairmanship, Malaysia hosted an ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Langkawi in January, where Myanmar’s crisis was reportedly the main topic of discussion.

With Myanmar remaining in turmoil over four years since the military coup, ASEAN foreign ministers urged an immediate cessation of military conflict and called on all armed groups to engage in dialogue.

Furthermore, they agreed that the elections planned by the military junta should not be prioritized and that ending violence should be the primary focus.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 3. PNO/PNA Accused of Targeting and Executing Civilians in Southern Shan State and Karenni-Related Areas

February 24

The Pa-O National Organization/Pa-O National Army (PNO/PNA), based in southern Shan State, has reportedly been involved in the targeted arrest and execution of civilians residing in Karenni State and its surrounding areas.

According to a February report by The Burma War Crimes Investigation (BWCI), the PNO/PNA, a military-backed militia in southern Shan State, carried out deliberate arrests and executions of civilians in Karenni-related regions.

BWCI conducted an eight-month investigation from March to November 2024, and its findings indicate that PNA’s acts of violence affected a total of 27 civilians, with confirmed evidence of these incidents.

Among the victims, four men and one woman were reportedly executed by PNA soldiers. Additionally, civilians, including those holding identification cards, as well as ethnic Kayah and Kayan residents of Shan State, were abducted and thrown into mass graves by PNA soldiers.

Some of those thrown into mass graves managed to escape and return home, but others reportedly went missing along the way, according to BWCI.
