๐๐ 1. Myanmar’s Special Advisory Council Welcomes the Deregistration of the Dysfunctional Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC)
March 13
Radio NUG
The Special Advisory Council for Myanmar (SAC-M) has welcomed the decision by the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), the world's largest human rights coalition, to revoke the membership of the dysfunctional Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC), effective December 31, 2024.
"As a result, GANHRI’s regional bodies, the Asia Pacific Forum (APF) of National Human Rights Institutions and the Southeast Asia National Human Rights Institution Forum (SEANF), will also be required to remove MNHRC from their networks. This action will further complicate the military junta’s attempts to gain legitimacy within international mechanisms, while also making it increasingly difficult for the junta to whitewash its appalling human rights record. Additionally, it will heighten the challenges for the military in evading international accountability," stated Connor Macdonald, Outreach and Communications Officer of SAC-M, a body comprising international human rights experts.
The CSO Working Group on NHRI Burma-Myanmar, which consists of 20 independent national human rights institutions and civil society organizations, along with the Asian NGO Network on National Human Rights Institutions (ANNI), has also renewed its call for the APF and SEANF to formally remove MNHRC from their respective networks.
