The Karen National Liberation Army (K.N.L.A) has captured the Khaleh Day military base, which had been occupied for 36 years by the junta forces in Hpa-An District, Hlaingbwe Township. According to a statement from the Karen National Union (KNU) Central Command, K.N.L.A’s 7th Brigade, along with its security task force, Battalion 19, Battalion 21, Battalion 22, and Battalion 24, coordinated the operation to seize the base.
The attack on the Khaleh Day base began on March 22 with drone bombings. In response, on March 24, the junta launched counterattacks using two jet fighters, dropping four 500-pound bombs, along with 36 additional bombs from a Y-12 aircraft. However, sustained offensives by the revolutionary forces on March 25 forced the junta troops to abandon the base. Before retreating, they burned their remaining weapons and ammunition.
The Khaleh Day military base was originally established on September 22, 1989, under the pretext of controlling the Thai-Myanmar border. Since its inception, local civilians have faced severe restrictions on movement and livelihood activities.
The K.N.L.A took control of the base in alignment with the aspirations of the local population for freedom of movement and economic activity. During the post-capture clearance operation, the bodies of two junta soldiers were discovered. The seized weapons and equipment included:
One 5-point rifle, two 5-point conversion rifles
One long-barreled 60mm mortar, one short-barreled 60mm mortar
