๐ฉ๐ฉ 1. Military Junta Prioritizes Airstrikes and Nuclear Ambitions Over Civilian Safety and Humanitarian Cooperation
May 1
New York — During the third session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Myanmar's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun, delivered the following remarks:
"Even in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar last month, the terrorist military continues to carry out indiscriminate aerial and heavy artillery attacks against civilian populations. At the same time, it remains focused solely on the advancement of its so-called nuclear energy development project.
This terrorist military regime does not cooperate with either regional or international organizations, nor does it show any respect for international law. As such, the junta cannot be expected to engage transparently with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in accordance with Article III of the NPT,” Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun stated.
He further warned that:
“A terrorist regime that weaponizes humanitarian aid in the aftermath of an earthquake disaster will undoubtedly weaponize nuclear technology as well.”
The 2026 NPT Review Conference is scheduled to take place from April 28 to May 9, 2025, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Myanmar’s delegation is being led by Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun.
