๐๐ 2. Kim Aris, Youngest Son of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Attends Conference on Myanmar at Palazzo Carpegna, Rome, Italy
May 21
Kim Aris, also known as Ko Htein Lin, the youngest son of public leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, attended a Myanmar-focused conference held at the Palazzo Carpegna, the seat of the Italian Senate in Rome.
The conference, held on Tuesday, May 20, at Palazzo Carpegna, was titled “Democracy, Freedom, and Peace: The Hopes of the Resilient People of Myanmar” and highlighted the ongoing resistance and aspirations of the Burmese people.
Organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Group of the Italian Senate, the event brought together various parliamentarians, civil society representatives, and activists, including Kim Aris.
In his speech, Kim Aris underscored the following key points:
- The steadfastness of the Myanmar people’s resistance;
- The fact that he has had no communication with his mother over the past four years, except for one letter, due to the junta’s complete isolation of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi;
- That she has been denied access to her lawyers, international organizations, or any other contacts;
- His deep concern for her well-being, especially in light of the serious neglect of medical care for political prisoners, which has led to deaths in custody;
- That the current situation in Myanmar involves not only the suppression of democracy and freedom, but also escalating violence and the loss of human lives, including indiscriminate killings and bombings that disregard international laws and norms.
Following his remarks, Vincenzo Scotti, the President of the Italy-Myanmar Together Association, called attention to the following:
- The junta’s manipulation of the recent earthquake disaster to solicit international support;
- ASEAN’s continued engagement with the illegitimate military regime;
- The need for the United Nations to take a clear and firm stance on the side of the people;
- The importance of the Italian government directly engaging and supporting the National Unity Government (NUG) and ethnic revolutionary groups, who now control more than half the country’s territory.

๐๐ 3. Thai Billionaire Dhanin Chearavanont Listed in ASEAN’s “Crony Capitalists” List by Justice For Myanmar
May 21
Thai billionaire Dhanin Chearavanont has been included in a list of crony capitalists operating in ASEAN, according to a report released by Justice For Myanmar.
The vast wealth of Chearavanont’s family is said to have been built through unethical practices. The Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group), which they control, is a stakeholder in two major joint-venture conglomerates involved in controversial projects in Myanmar’s Rakhine State—namely, a Special Economic Zone and a deep-sea port in Kyaukphyu.
These projects are part of the larger China-Myanmar Economic Corridor and have been pursued in close partnership with Myanmar’s military regime, which seized power in a 2021 coup attempt.
In 2023, a follow-up agreement related to the deep-sea port was signed during an official ceremony led by coup-appointed junta minister Aung Naing Oo, who is under international sanctions. The deal was inked amid criticism from media and civil society, and appears to have been deliberately advanced during the coup period to shield the project from scrutiny and accountability.
The CP Group is also active in Myanmar’s agricultural sector. In 2014, the company was exposed for buying fish feed from suppliers known to be using forced labor, including trafficked and enslaved migrant workers.
This report was compiled and submitted by Radio NUG correspondents Tharki and Ko Khan.
